Thinking of doing this system.
CPU - i5 3550
GPU - GTX 550 Ti
RAM - 4GB
Case and PSU - CM Elite 334 with 400W PSU.
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2P-B3
Now i was told for that motherboard to support ivybridge, it would need to undergo a BIOS Update.. Is that true? And does it run fine after the update?
Thanks guys
ridwansameer, this is not bottlenecking, bottlenecking is like you get an nvidia gtx 690 but you cheap out on the processor and get an Intel pentium G620. What this is called is clarification. For your question, i will leave it to someone more experienced.
Alriht thanks mate.
Im not sure wether your saying its bottlenecking or not, Hope to get some moer answers :)
Definitely not bottlenecking ridwansameer and yes you were told right if you update your BIOS you can use Ivy bridge processors.
You need to find what what revision motherboard you have, usually on the side of the motherboard box theres a Model name sticker with a good bit of info and that tells you the Rev number of your board. You will also need a USB flash drive. Down below are the BIOS for either of the revisions, get the latest bios update.
Here is for Rev 1.0: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3952#bios
Here is for Rev 1.1: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3992#bios
Here is a really good simple video on how to updae your BIOS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1g6p6B-jMA
If this is something you do not feel confortable doing for any reason then do not do it, a local computer shop can do this for you and assume all the risk if they make a mistake.
Hey mate
I posted the same question on another forum
Everyone there told me that isntead of going for this setup, go for an i3.. and with the moeny i save go for a GTX 660.. And that ill get better gaming performance.
Do you agree with that?
i agree
because im sure that the rest of the system is bottlenecking the cpu, if you are going to use it for gaming
i am not sure that every H61 motherboard is going to support ivy bridge even with the newest bios
I talked to the vendor of the motherboard
They confirmed that their motherboards are already updated and supports Ivybridge.
So the i3 and 660 is the better of the two build am i right?
GTX660 definitely is a proper card, competes directly with the HD7870 but right now you can get it for $20 less then the H7870 making it a better deal. Here is a bench how it does in different games at different resolutions: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/660
My only concern if you go with the 660 is that power supply, what power supply is it? Generic non brand power supplies can sometimes be really bad, can you gives us the model name?
The one listed there is Generic non branded.. However i might switch over to an antec 520W
And a Silverstone PS01 casing... :)
Good choices on both units ridwansameer! When you do decide if you are getting the Antec, please come back and link us which you are choosing and we can make sure everything will have enough leg room for future growth.
Gotcha
Thanks for the info (Y)
Best way to tell if you are bottlenecking is if you are spending more or less on your CPU or GPU they need to be around the same price.
Btw guys what do you think is better
GTX 660 + i3
or
GTX 650 + i5?
For gaming purposes
The GTX660 is a far better card and for that the system with it will get better gaming results. Here is a bench of the results, it is quite a massive difference: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/660?vs=681
