Well since Adblock has been paid off and doesn't work anymore I need a new extension/software to stop this. I use Chrome, I like Chrome, I use pretty much all Google web-based products (Gmail, Docs, Drive, etc.). I don't like Firefox, Firefox does not have what I need to get work done, so don't try to sell me on Firefox please, don't turn this thread into that.
With that said, what else can I do to block ads? I have DD-WRT (micro build) on my router if that can be utilized as well.
You could try Adblock Plus. I've been using it with Adblock and I still don't have any issues with ads. Of course, that could just be because Adblock Plus is blocking everything and Adblock is just sitting around doing nothing.
I had heard that Ghostery was bought out by an advertisement company. However, I can’t speak to the validity of this claim or necessarily say that it in any way reduces that efficacy of the plugin.
I actually use a stack of them. Ghostery ( i am aware of the conflict of interest ) ublock origin ( seems busy most of the time ) Disconnect ( too new to me barely have an opinion ) Privacy badger ( has some options managing cookies from wanted content ) No Script ( at least the basic protection ) Https Everywhere. A combo that is not for those light on resources. One or the other does seem to catch most stuff. I run Firefox and duckduckgo for search. Firefox just added some kind of blocker as standard. Like very new. Checking it out now. My personal opinion is to run more than one. What one misses the other may pick up. Throw in a vpn and a search engine/ browser that doesnt straight track you.
I personally switched from Adblock to AdGuard a long time ago and I find it to be much better tan AdBlock was (at least at the time). Beyond blocking ads it also blocks social media stuff on websites which I found to be annoying, it blocks online counters and analytics (those that it knows about anyway, which of course includes Google Analytics and other popular ones) and offers a "Phishing and Malware protection", the usefulness of which I cannot comment on. On top of that, the settings, when clicking on the icon in the top right in your browser, is much more responsive than those of AdBlock when I used it. Overall a great extension. Used it on both Chromium and Firefox, it may exist on other platforms too, though I would not count on it.
Edit: Wow, I just realized this is a dead thread created in April '14.
No? Actually I use it to improve my internet surfing exp. Yes, i don"t want be track everywhere but really just want a good/clean internet surfing exp. People don't understand how much of this crap is bogging down their browsers and pc;s. Even with all the stuff running in the background my surfing exp. is still decent and quick.
Maybe that was an overstatement, you are right. I installed the extensions. My Firefox was slow before but this is something else. Time to go back to Chromium for this. Cannot wait for Servo to arrive, I hope it will help Firefox become top dog among browsers.
I have no reference to what you mean by slow ? As using chrome is not an option ? Will not use it. Been watching vivaldi browser still too early for it in my opinion. Firefox runs quick for me? Now loading a site up that is full of trash can be slow. I rate sites on the amount of trash they have. Tho ? Sometimes it is faster because your not loading up the trash. Sometimes it is not the browsers fault ? It is the site and the amount of trash they are forcing upon you.
Ya, set up is a pain but is so sweet when it is done. Much easier afterwords. Block everything and pick what you want based on your use is pretty easy tho ?
