The terrible marketing designations ring true, but the rest looks like napkin scribblings to me.
I think they should name them X8, X6, and X4. That way, you can easily tell what each SKU had in terms of cores. And calling it Ryzen X would line up nicely with their RX line of graphics cards.

I can't imagine why. One of the awesome things about AMD is that they don't dick you around with CPU features like Intel does. Hardware virtualization becomes a thing, every AMD processor from a certain point forward has it, even the lowly Athlon IIs. IOMMU becomes a thing, every AMD processor from a certain point forward has it, even the lowly Athlon IIs. They're introducing SMT to their CPUs, it should be on every AMD processor moving forward, even the lowly Athlon IIs (or whatever their equivalent might be). Actually, I'll be kind of irritated if a 4C/4T chip actually exists.

Well AMD has been known to screw up the naming like this in the past...This actually rings true...
I think adoreTV´s X makes more sense. If this indeed the naming it is the best way to confuse the CPU series with the older GPU cards.
Think about it this way:

R7 R5 R3Yes the X-naming makes a lot more sense in that regard. But the numbers for either scheme dont really make sense. I mean when descending from the flagship of the x8 sku it goes from 4000 be to 3700 be back to 4200? And with x6 and x4 it goes from 3800 be to 4000? In terms of those numbers amd's naming seems to make a bit more sense, other than the fact that we dont fucking know what the pro means. If the pro is lower than non pro, which the chart may suggest, it will be a complete disaster in terms of naming. If they're gonna release 17 cpus, they should figure out the damn naming, which Intel has done

i really hope they change the numbers represent the cores. I don't care if its X8, Rx8, or R8, just please no arbitrary 3,5,7.

What took so long for AMD to put multi threads their processors?
Well, technically every processor has threads...
If you're talking about hyperthreading, AMD had always been about using a fistful of cores rather than a few cores with silicon magic. The hyperthreads are not as fast as the base core after all.
Well, a 8C/8T CPU would be faster than a 6C/12T CPU, but a little cheaper than a 8C/16T CPU. Thus, it is possible they'd hit the sweet spot for some people. Then again, it all depends on the pricing.
Afaik 1 hyperthread can bei counted as 1/4 of an additional core. Therefore a 4C/8T CPU has about the same performance as a 5C CPU (4 real cores, plus 4 x (1/4)).
i actually have hyper threading turned off on my cpu. I used to experience micro stutters while gaming and tried everything and couldn't fix it. Turned hyper threading off in bios, fixed it. Not as thrilled as everyone else about AMD getting it.
Maybe this is like x64 back when?
Intel was first but it was shit.
AMD came in second and it was amazing.
In my experience, at least with Ivy Bridge and Sky Lake, hyperthreading is actually about 3/4 as powerful as a full core.
Unfortunately the only benchmark I've done that I can find again is for Blender, but it's in line with other benchmarks I've done.
I think R# has been associated with GPUs and that's where the confusion comes from which does bother my inner OCD a little bit.
