AliExpress 2x10GbE + 2xM.2 adapter

I recently had to spec & build some servers for a couple of ProxMox & Ceph clusters, built in a short-depth InWin 1U case and the Minisforum BD795M board.

Since the case & MB combo only allowed one slot/board, and Ceph performance was predictably dismal using the single 2.5GbE on the MB, I spent some time evaluating options for the one PCIe slot.

Almost any 2x10GbE NICs could be have been fine, but I wanted some additional storage as well as 2x10GbE. I tried the $299 McFiver (1x10GbE, 2xM.2, 2x10Gbps USB 3.2) but it was spendy and I really wanted a 2nd 10GbE.

Anyway, eventually I found this card on AE: https://a.aliexpress.com/_EzljYYB. Around $130 for 2x10GbE, 2xM.2, no bifurcation required.

It seemed a bit sus that it was just PICe3.0x4, AIUI that’s not enough PCIe bandwidth to run all 4 devices at full speed simultaneously. But I tested it out and was pretty happy with the results.

Both NICs managed to simultaneously each push ~9.5+ Gbps via iPerf, and even though that only leaves about 1.5Gbps for the M.2s on the AIC, Ceph with a 10GbE link and 3 nodes/3 OSDs on the motherboard M.2s was bottlenecking around 1Gbps anyway.

So IMO, for this scenario the AE card seems pretty unique - affordable hybrid dual 10 GbE NIC and dual M.2 storage, low profile 1-slot card. Anyway, hopefully this is useful for other folk digging through the back catalog of AIBs for your own home lab builds.

Intel X610 is to come out soon.

It should have a version with dual and quad RJ-45 and use PCIe4x8.

A shame that is not SFP+
