I was able to get the files from the server to my laptop. I copied the files to the username's home directory, changed the ownership of the files (with the command from above). Then used scp to copy them from the server my computer. Then deleted the copied files off the server via SSH.
So that's good.
I think all I need to do now is to compile the files into one unified file and do the port forwarding.
