Morning everyone!
I decided to throw a topic up here and get some third party feedback and input on a possible CPU transition or platform upgrade.
Two years ago i built my i7 system on a non-K 4770. Fortunately, i haven't had any issues. Over the last year my workload has transitioned from primarily gaming to a combination of productivity and gaming (transitioning careers at the moment). As such, i have begun to consider - or at least research - my options to improve my productivity and longevity of the system given the change in workload.
While i don't have a hard budget, i am not looking to spend a tremendous amount of money in a rebuild (fortunately storage, power, and graphics are not an issue as of yet).
My options, as i see them, are either take the 700 - 800 dollar hit and move to x99 outright or look into other socket 1150 options that i can overclock.
I appreciate any and all input ahead of time.
Moving to X99 for productivity will give you huge performance boost even with the cheaper ish 6cores. CPU upgrade IMHO will be kind of pointless. Even the cheapest X99 combo will annihilate any 1150 platform in productivity.
In my country, cheap-ish X99 mobo and 6 core cost slightly more than high end 1150 cpu and mobo.
However, my suggestion will be:
Wait. 2 reasons - 10 months until Zen from amd, 16 cores, 32 threads. Even if per core performance lacks behind Intel, 16 core cpu will destroy any 1150 or even the low end X99. And if I am wrong, there is always X99 or whatever Intel shows until then.
Since you are only looking into it, my advice - hold up for now.
I appreciate the input Psycho, thanks for responding. I forgot about Zen but I am really interested to hear what AMD has to offer. Do have any idea of when we will hear more about it - not necessarily release, but a press conference or something along those lines?
Well, as far as I know there will be Q3 Zen release, so my guess will be Q1 next year there will be a lot more info. Right now what I know is 16 cores, 32 threads, some rumors say HBM for the APUs, some say it will use DDR4 as Vram. But anyway, dual channel DDR4, however there are rumors about compatibility with DDR3, but God knows, since this will be new platform on new socket, there will be CPUs only on the high end, AMD claims about 40% per core performance increase, but I will be conservative and will say between 25 and 30%. This means, that the per core performance will be slightly below Ivy bridge. Also, the really bad news is over 120W TDP, which will make them hotter than 8350. However, non of those is officially confirmed from AMD, but I believe most of the stuff.
I am expecting spring 2016 to have some extra information about Zen. I am really hoping this will be good, otherwise we are left with Intel and Nvidia, and I am not sure how well skyrim will run on Intel graphics.
