Advantages of a SSD?

I am currently in the process of building my first gaming PC. I have a 1TB Seagate Barrracuda lined up as a storage device, but i want to try an SSD as the OS boot drive, also for drivers ect. As i am new to SSD, what are the main advantages of having as SSD? Would there really be an advantage of putting it in a gamming rig, other than faster boot times? With the criteria listed, what would be a good choice for a SSD? thanks for the help, im kida new to this.

I believe the main advantage of an SSD over a mechanical drive is speed, so having your games installed on your SSD, means you get quicker load times - I'm sure there are more benefits, just not those I can think off the top of my head

I'm sure Logan's explained better in his videos - here are the reviews of the SSD's which you've probably already seen, but for reference

SSD Choice

  • If it's new, anything will do really. Just get the cheapest thing that has the GB you want.
  • Some people say that OCZ are more likely to fail, ignore them. OCZ's RMA rate is better than most.

SSD Performance - Gaming

  • Faster load times.
  • That's it, nothing to see here.

SSD Performance - OS

  • Accessing a lot of small files (ie. searches, security scans, servers).
  • Starting/closing and installing/uninstalling software.
  • Multi-tasking (ie. you can move files around while installing something, during a virus scan).
  • Performance only deteriates a little, as the storage gets used up. HHDs get a lot slower; defragging will not stop this, only formating will.

If it's only for gaming, screw it. The new 1TB Western Digital Raptors will do.

For gaming, the performance difference between a couple hundred MB/s and a couple thousand is single digit seconds.

Cheers

Also only storage option if you ever feel like making a mineral oil-cooled pc.

Something less is vibration, which is usually prevented with rubber on the cages.
