well not to derail the topic to drive performance, but I have nearly a TB of music, and that is because I love FLAC. So while yeah it might be cool if I could ditch a HDD for an SSD, I’m always writing to my music and storage drives. Like a lot. I will say I’ve had a Crucial 500gb SSD in my laptop and have been writing to that pretty heavily, but it’s not something I have as much confidence in as a HHD. Plus 2tb SSDs are still pretty expensive. 259 for a wd blue on newegg.

It’s hit or miss. Put your HDDs on a nice HBA you’ll have a proper good time.
I’ve IT flashed two or three PERC H310 cards and they work great. At least in Fedora with ZFS, not sure about freenas. Probably work fine. Get a couple 8087 breakout cables from amazon and boom you’ve got eight SATA drives.
