Adding a Switch to my Network

Greetings All;

I have a problem that I am hoping that someone might be able to advise me with.

I presently have two computers on my local area network, one PC is a workstation system with a 10/100/1000 megabyte network connection. The other computer is a HTPC that has the same 10/100/1000 megabyte network connection which is an integrated network port. Connecting these two computers I have CAT5e cable that should support 1000Mb transfer rate, however I am getting only 100 megabytes of data transfer.

This network has a TP-Link router that connects to my ISP, it is limited to a maximum of 100 Mb/s. In addition to this I have a second router made by Linksys it is a Wireless G  2.4 Ghz. model which again is limited to a maximum of 100 megabytes.

The routers and computers are wired like this, the TP-Link router connects to my ADSL line, this router is then connected to the Linksys Router using one of the standard RG45 ports on the back. The two computers are then each connected to the Linksys router using an additional two ports of this router.

My thinking is to purchase a 5-8 port switch that has the capabilities of running at 10/100/1000 megabyte network connection speeds thus allowing to two computers to communicate at their highest speed level.  I would then connect the TP-Link ADSL2+ router to this switch for Internet support and finally connect the Linksys router for wireless support.

My question is: Will this work? What should I be looking for in a new switch besides the supported speed levels?

 As a note with the Wireless Router I presently do not use the port designated Cable/DSL Modem but rather use one of the 4 additional RJ45 ports to connect the ADSL router to. By doing this I treat the Linksys router as just a switch.

Thank you all for your assistance.

Yeah, that will work fine, just wire it up like you described and it will just work. As for what you should look for, if you don't need any other features then any gigabit switch will work fine.

Thank you for the confirmation

If your router doesn't support gigabit, I don't think you'll get gigabit (someone else may know something I dont) but the 100mbps part will work just fine. Just make sure to plug the linksys router into the TP link router via the Linksys router's LAN port, not the WAN port, and turn off DHCP (or put it in "Access Point Mode" if it has that)

Good luck!
