Ok guys i have been reading everyones separate posts on a few boards and watching youtube vids over the topic. But yea I finally got an ssd( a kingston ssdnow v300 120gb), now i need to install my OS (W7) on it. I have seen places separate ways like migrating tools and clean installs, but which should i do. I can see why a clean install then setting my ssd as primary would work, but what about all my media on my 2TB drive. Can I still use the media or would I have to back up then format it( so it would be :D drive ). I feel dumb for asking since I has been tinkering with pcs for years but have not migrated/upgraded an ssd and saved info. Also I know I would have to reinstall all important programs and games after the clean install anyways. Please help.
The media should be fine, but the programs might be a different story. My understanding is that programs are registered with the registry, and if you do a clean install (which I recommend), then Windows won't be able to find programs installed on the secondary drive unless you reinstall them.
so just uninstall programs then reinstall on media drive
For programs already installed on the media drive, re-installation could be needed, but not necessarily - there are a lot of programs that can work without needing to be registered. I have a few games from my previous Windows install that I totally forgot about sitting on my storage drive that I could launch... if I could find them. Starseige is a dated example. I believe I also have Mass Effect left over as well. Again, some programs may not work without registering (reinstall/repair) with the new Windows install, but many still work if you just find the launching exe file.
All other media should be easily accessible without any tweaking (music, movies, pictures, etc)
