Adding a second graphic card for PhysX?

Greetings from Denmark.

So I have this PC setup:

  • CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (3.4 Ghz Quad-Core).
  • RAM: 8 GB OCZ 1066 Mhz. PC2-8500 DDR2 Reaper HPC Edition
  • Motherboard: ASUS M3N-HT Deluxe/HDMI
  • PSU: LC1000 V2.3 Legion X2 - Metatron Serie
  • Graphic: MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II/OC (1 GB)
  • Primary HDD: Western Digital Raptor 74 GB 10.000 RPM SATA. (OS)
  • Secondary HDD: WD VelociRaptor 150 GB 10.000 RPM SAT. (Data)
  • Tertiary HDD: WD Velociraptor 36 GB 10.000 RPM SATA. (Pagefile + other stuff)
  • OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit
  • Monitor: LG E2210P-BN - 22" (1680x1050)

I have a spare 8800 GTS 512 based on the 65 nm G92 GPU, lying around collecting dust.

I have considered installing it in the above rig, and using it as a PhysX processor.

But the question is, is it worth the hassle, will I benefit from it, or is it too old, and will it slow down the rest of the system? And are there any benefits in general of using an extra graphics card for PhysX?

I play the following games on the machine (I use the PC strictly for gaming, I have no other application/programs installed):

  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
  • Metro2033
  • Arma 2 (DayZ mod)

Thank you in advance for any constructive feedback.

Best regards:

Why not? Throw it in, do some benchmarks and if it helps, keep it, if not well then back to a single 560. It will only slow down a system in games if it cant handle the physx. Im getting my old system back next week to save money on my new build and I will be chucking my old 560 in there as physx. In tests, Batman, Archem city will use 40% of a gtx 580 in a dual 780 setup. Just test and see if it helps. If it dosent well you now have a new coaster :D
