As a child my brothers and friends and family didnt have to decide on which console to buy based on who we could play with. Most games had offline coop or vs play and we all new how to play games on the console the others had. We also had all summer to visit each other and play every consoles games together. Now going into my 30’s, and not having time to go to my brothers or family to play games on their hardware, I began to think gaming was not the same or as fun as it once was. Not being able to play with friends and family because of exclusives or no cross play is what i run into. I get to keep 36 grand a year after taxes doing concrete construction and my friends and family cant all buy every system and copies of games to keep up with our interest. I just want to ask if others feel being seperated from others based on this marketing structure has made gaming less fun or even had their social happiness reduced?
Short version: no.
IMO, video games aren’t worth being such a significant factor in my life as to allow their marketing to have a measurable effect on my life.
There are a lot of other wonderful things in the world
Game publishers/developers pushing certain games, to having the multiplayer support
Then again, it doesn’t mean, that the game(s) would be good, let alone multi-platform friendly
mho, I’d just stick with the game(s), that just clicked with your group
It may not even be about the game; but the antics on comms, that’ll make a good time
Personally, it hasn’t really impacted me at all. Everyone I would play with already plays on PC. That said, I do understand where you’re coming from, and would prefer to see cross-play become more common. I don’t think there’s usually a good technical reason for not having it, assuming the game in question is already on multiple platforms anyway.
Personally, I feel like the “trend chasers” are always looking for a “new high” with what marketing calls latest and greatest. And I am sitting on Gog browsing the Good Old Games…
I play minecraft with my kid over LAN. But she also plays on a grandfather’s phone sometimes, with Roblox, because that is what you could watch on YT lets plays.
I dont like it, especially if the game is over a phone because phones are extra creepy gaming device. Its slightly better on the PC if you could have dedicated hardware for it.
On a separate but related note, I dont tend to like triple-A type games, especially with online components because the microtransaction is there and they do tend to advertise it on the game’s main screen. Its a bit manipulative and friends (or families) dont let friends (or families) play them.
I’d stick to indies with lower production values because they tens to prioritize gameplay and fun over profit and bragging to peers.
