We had a small tragedy in our household this past week. I'm posting about this now because I haven't been able to get into the forums for days. No idea why that changed, but I'm quite glad that it did.
So the tragedy is that one of our ferrets passed away. Rusl was going to be a year old in just a few weeks. Most of you have probably not ever had ferrets, but they are some of the most intelligent and loving animals I've ever raised.
Now, this on it's own would simply be a small tragedy, nothing more. It doesn't feel small, not to me, and certainly not to my fiancee, but it is what it is. An accident took Rusl in his relative youth (ferrets live to 5-6) and that would be it.
But we have another ferret. Link. These two grew up together. They bonded like brothers. And now, Link is alone of his kind in our house -- something he's never experienced. Ferrets are extremely social animals. If you have ever had more than one or two dogs, you've seen how they form tight-knit family packs. Ferrets do this even more so.
We are afraid that Link will pass away from loneliness and grief. This is something that happens with ferrets, and something we don't want to happen to him.
This brings me to my request. We've set up a gofundme (link at bottom of post) to try and find the funds to acquire Link a new sibling. This way, we hope, he can recover and continue to share his boundless energy and enthusiasm with us for years to come.
Now, before some of you assume... yes. We would rescue rather than buy if that was an option. It has been fully explored -- a year ago, in fact, just before these two weird little cat-snakes became part of our household. It's simply not feasible. And, while the care and feeding of ferrets is not expensive, acquiring a ferret is.
If you can't donate, that's fine. I understand. But if you can't donate, please share the gofundme everywhere you can think of.
I don't get to talk about my love for animals or the pseudo-rescue that is our home online very often. It's sad that this was the first in recent memory, but you guys could help me make a difference here for Link.
Thank you for reading. And yes. They are named for who you probably think they are named for.
