A sensible view on the new YouTube Partner terms. Changes that will come Feb/20th/2018

Maybe, but if they are a powerful enough force then the union can decline that. A lot of content is already de facto exclusive to YouTube anyway. The logistics of organizing YouTubers makes it highly unlikely anyway, but quite frankly I feel like the standard of living should be such that anyone can afford to be a “content creator” anyway because most people don’t get paid to create culture on a daily basis. Think of all your friends on Snapchat and Instagram. The whole concept of “content creator” is pretty rediculous, like your average person isn’t already engaging in cultural creativity

The data analytics based on browsing and watching habits have value too. Ad revenue is only one piece of the puzzle.

I find this drama pretty ridiculous. Its like people have become dumb when it comes to making money in a business. Even if Youtube paid nothing for ads you still get to distribute a video that millions can watch for free. Nobody in business school would say in order to become successful wait for donations from corporations.

The whole point of collecting that data is to sell people ads though.

Can you explain how this is reasonable when people cannot spend hours in front of a computer all the time? 4000 hours of views for a whole year. People do not like long videos and if you make how to videos you will never meet the new standard. Your videos will only be used when needed and every once in awhile.

What if you are learning video editing and dont have the pro skills with intros and outros and other editing knowledge? Those few pennies or dollars they were getting could go into a savings for better gear and other items needed.

Having almost everyone on the planet in one place watching content is a plus. If that where to fracture in double digits across “other youtubes” google would worry.

Could be sold to other sources as well

but muh GNU freedum?

Well if someone is going to create a platform to do exactly what the current ones are already doing (sell my personal data), then I’ll just stick to the already established platform, because we’ve already seen where that model leads to (this exact situation)

That’s why it should be P2P. So they don’t need to do that, but more importantly so they can’t do that

This is a problem. Not everyone uses a VPN and they can get into trouble with their ISP for copyright reasons. No ISP likes for someone to use P2P. All it takes is some flagging system to potentially land you in court. Ever heard of DMCA emails from ISPs to those that Pirate?

Most users dont want to host how ever many gigabytes they upload, p2p is not feasible, its ridiculous in fact, and then to have a usable UI? Someone has to develop that, who pays for the development?

Single points of failure are never an advantage. With YouTube going the “premium/professional” route in time it should be possible to start up in the amature video hosting space.

Other revenue streams (such as some of game studio partnerships Twitch does) Make traditional advertisements not that important as a revenue stream.

How exactly do creators profit from p2p?
Your average user doesn’t want to download and host videos. What of people with data limits or niche content? High quality streams would kill users.

Won’t take off. ISPs will block it because it will be used heavily for piracy. Same thing happened with bit torrent.

Pornhub and LiveLeak show it is possible to make a video platform even in the fringe space.

I wonder how long it would take to DFS or BFS through a giant node network. It might take a while jut to find the video.

  1. 4000 hours a year can easily be made, even though I have 6 videos and haven’t posted in months I have already passed that amount with only 600 subscribers.
  2. me and my friend make many long videos and we get tens of thousands of views from almost each of them.
  3. Theres a fabulous thing called looking up tutorials on how to use software, I did so (with a not so legal version of sony vegas) and its worked out just fine.
  4. The few pennies they get would take a looong time to save up for any sort of proper software, I have Ulcerative colitis and I cant even get a job because of this debilitating disease that keeps me bed ridden a lot of the time. The fact that even I was able to almost make it without being active on my channel showes that its easy as long as your dedicated and hard working.

If twitch challenged youtube on the mass not the tiny market that is gamers watching games play games. It would not be this thread.

I used Twitch’s revenue as an example not as who would take the mantle. But if Amazon did focus on expanding the scope…

Pornhub seems the most primed to be able to produce a video hosting platform. Their infrastructure is very impressive.

More competitors are a good thing and look forward to YouTube alienating it’s creators and viewers.

You have help and have stated people you know in a network to promote one another. This does not apply to someone who has no backing on social media or a network of trusted people to promote you.

I want to know where you went for clear and precise tutorials. All the ones I have found have been very low quality and they really dont tell you anything.
