A random caller tries to hack my mother's computer

My mother knocked on my door and next thing I know she says someone was calling her saying that someone was hacking her computer. Saying he was from some company But the thing is, her computer was off the entire time.

I asked for the guy's supervisor and he keeps repeating the same message. I falsely said I would call the police if he called again.

i called back the number on my phone and all I got was a regular inbox message. Not a company number.

this is the number i got off the phone.

631-292-9863

Can you guys help me out with info? What was this all about?

Sounds like just a cheap scam attempt. Would probably ask to transfer some protection money next.

A typical example would be to call some grandma, pretend to be her grandson an explain that they just got into a crash and would have to go to jail if a certain amount won't be transferred to the victim's account. Sometimes grandma's get so scared, they forget they don't have grandsons...

You might want to look up if you have a local police number where you could report this. Works differently depending on country. You'd also have more weight if you managed to get more info out of the guy and record the audio.

I would of definitely contacted the local authorities, but only if I recognized the area code.

Definitely a scam or maybe a prank call?

Typical scammer. These people will call just about anybody- they claim that they're working for a third-party microsoft company and that they want to perform a free virus-removal session. Don't mind them. Usually, they'll use 'logmein' and convince the unknowing person into granting them access to their machines.

Yea, they were asking for access to her machine. Thanks for the info.

There are some intresting videos on youtube regarding this scam, especially scam baits, worth a look

Don't know if this will help much but the area code is in New York: http://www.allareacodes.com/631

ty for the info

We got these for a few months, it stopped after i told them I run Linux and they just hung up.

We've had these calls happen at the place I work a couple of times. Were a IT company...

Most of them claim to be support from Microsoft.

they're usually computer illiterates from southern africa running winXP.

I run a VM for this, just so I can phish their IPs and DDoS them from my school's gigabit connection.

lots of fun

lol

It's a scam along the line of pop ups on your computer say: "YOU'RE INFECTED! 9000 ERRORS, CLICK HERE TO FIX"

Instead of fixing viruses, it uses your naiveté to infect you.

Seems alot of people get calls from this number.

Also the number is on this "Company's" website, https://neopcsupport.com/index.php

That's how you do it.
