A quick introduction, and a few questions

Hey everyone, great to finally come here. Awesome show, great community.

Now before anything, i think it's important for me to point out i am not all that well educated with comupters and tech, It's always been a passion ever since my first PC which was a pentium 486 back in 1994 (?).

Anyway, i had some problems with my PSU and once it died i changed it, but in the process of looking for a good PSU, i started looking around at what else is being offered. I could not believe i let myself get out of the loop so badly. Since i had this computer, 4-5 years, i completely stoped looking around at whats new in the hardware industry. Now i'm hoping to get a new computer soon, and here i am again, looking around benchmarks, prices and what not.

This will be pretty damn obvious to most, but i thought i'd point it out anyway. Especially to those who have been out of the loop for a while, and not very tech savy.

When i started researching, i was completely ignoring even the possibility of getting an AMD cpu. Any guy i asked for advice in shops or where ever, practicly shot AMD down like a piece of crap. For a while there, i was amongst those that thought AMD was a joke. Then i compared benchmarks from Intel and AMD, and yeah AMD was way behind.

After being almost convinced AMD was for loosers, i ran a few benchmarks on my 4-5 year old computer. Core2duo 6550, MSI P35 Neo2, MSI 8800gt. And i was shocked. Computer i bought years back for a thousand euros, is like 2-3 slower then a computer that you can get now for like 400 euros.

I know this all is very obvious, but it's meant for people like me, who dont really know much about hardware and been out of the loop for some time.  The moral of the story i guess is that sometimes you really dont see the trees from the forrest.

Anyway, a few questions now...i'm thinking of getting an AMD a10 5800k, msi a85x, and  2x4gb kingston hyperx beast 2400mhz.

I already have a Raidmax AF600w psu 80plus bronze, and housing. Will the memory work at 2400mhz on that motherboard?  And will i be able to put modern day mobo's into a chassi that's a few years old? As in is there a standard for that, or is there a possibility that i wont be able to fit/screw and place the mobo into place?

Also, what do you guys think the difference is between the MSI 8800gt and AMD's apu in the 5800k?

I'm sure i'll have more questions later on, and now when i look back at how much i have wrote...wow..sorry guys.

Anywho, best of wishes from Serbia, and happy to be here!

The 7660d inside the A10 APU will have roughly the same graphics performance as your 8800gt. It'll only win if you crossfire it with an HD 6670.The CPU itself will probably be roughly twice as fast as your core2duo though.

The CPU is great, not sure about the 7660D though. As SecretAuthor said, you could crossfire it with an 6670 but Crossfire doesn't work great in all games.

In Cinebench my CPU score was 1.something. While in the reviews the 5800k is above 3 points. The only real reason why i'm so interested in this AMD cpu cos instead of getting a dedicated GPU i really need a new monitor, and i'm obviously on a budget. Thank you for the replies, and will keep you posted when and if i get this rig.

Since you're on a budget and need to buy a monitor, the integrated GPU will work fine I guess. If you get really really fast memory you'll be able to run Skyrim at around 45 fps.

If the case is atandard ATx 4/5 years would probabley be then it will all fit. but remember, with those fast harware thease days, its realy recomded to have a good airflow in the case.

personaly if you wanne go for gaming, i think maybe you can better go with a AM3+ platform with a  single gpu configuration. its a bit depending what youre budget is about....

so give us a budget to help.

all intel fans talk crap over amd cause they jealous that amd made a cpu FX8350 who is faster in  gaming then the I5 3570k, in 8/10 games. and very close, and somethimes wenn it comes to streaming gaming, the FX8350 wil even beat the 3770k in some games.

the only diffrence is that the FX8350 cost about 189 dollar, and the i7 3770K is about 400 dollar or so? and the fps in games are realy closes. about 2/5 fps , when it comes to normal gaming, but in streaming the FX8350 beats it. for much cheaper.

the selling store will ofc will sell the most expensive stuff, lol, and they eaven try to sell you the old socket 1155 who is dead at the moment.

but if i may advice you  please gives us some budget. then we can make, an APU configuration, and also a configuration with a FX and gpu.

He really wants the APU so he can afford a monitor, a single CPU + dedicated GPU would just cost too much. And with some fast memory, the APU will do fine for some light gaming,

@MisteryAngel btw hoe goed heb je opgelet in de lessen Engels? :P
Socket 1155 which is, niet who is. These ipv thease.

Iemand aanspreken op fouten is uiteraard helemaal niks mis mee.

My budget without the monitor is around 400-450 euroes. If i was in the US, for the money i could probably get an FX cpu, and a dedicated graphics card. But unfortunately in Serbia computer or tech related products are about 10% to sometimes even 30% more expensive. For example this MSI mobo is around 110 euros. Taking into consideration the difference between the euro and the dollar, that's not a small difference.

What also ran across my mind, that if eventually i want to upgrade, i might get the new Richland series. Now, i want to point out, that i'm not a hardcore games. Even when i got my last PC with the 8800gt, games i could have played in full detail or resolution, i didn't. I don't mind lower resolutions. And the games i play and enjoy the most are simulations, strategies, and really only played three or four FPS games in the past 10 years, Far cry 1, Crysis 1 and 2, and CoD 2.  It's also worth mentioning i never played these games online.

I just want something that's fast for everyday use, and half decent for gaming.

yes i know i live in europe too, more expensive :)
