A pc build to knock my dads socks off

So basically, ive been trying to convince my dad to move off his ancient iMac for years now. Funily enough, he doesnt even use OSX (win 7 bootcamp), and he keeps complaining that he cant game (well, the hardware in that mac is shit). Well he gave me a challenge. If I make him a pc cheaper than the 27inch 5k iMac that has a 27 inch 4k monitor, is MiniATX, looks nice and can kick the ass of that 5k iMac, I can build it for him.

My first kinda 5 minute part pick was this:

any opinions/tips?

The only things im currently worried about are: will that 980Ti fit in the Node.

You can fit a R9 390 in there, which is 300mm long, your 980Ti is 282mm long, so it will fit.

For reference here is a r9 390 inside the node 304:

And here's a build with the same exact 980ti: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/Bthqqs So it fits.

That case has a lot lot lot more room than I thought

Why buy a 6700k with a h170 mobo? Buy a Z170xp-SLI mobo and 6700, save on the heatsink, the stock one runs great. Spend more on the monitor and give him a good gaming mouse/keyboard combo.

The mobo I didnt pay attention to cause I know shit all about MiniATX (Im a full tower typa gyal) so thank you for catching my silliness!

Wasn't paying attention to the mini ATX board. Man just look around get mid range hardware for your mobo. Consider a r9 390 Sapphire, and look at other mini ATX cases that offer expansion.

If you are not planning on overclocking at all, I would go for a none K processor, which than makes the Z line of chipset also unnecessary and actually saves value pounds that can be spent on a monitor in your case (4k required).

Personally I think the stock ones are still just like "get the job done" and the K skew comes without it. So if K one needs a aftermarket cooler;

sigh

If you read my first post, I mentioned that this was something I put together in 5 minutes.

Before doing the actual build, Im going to go through part by part and actually pick the best price to performance for what he need.

K, Id love to see how a r9 390 saphire plays 4k without me wanting to puke my guts out cause of 30 fps... lol

If im decide on K im ocing. Im not stupid enough to buy a K and then not oc.

That got nothing to do with stupid! - just a well meant mention no prejudice or alike.

I know I know, Im just not too happy about being at work on a Sunday and I (lightly) took it out on you :*

I could return that favor :P I am at work as well since 7am through 7pm >:-)

Onto the topic: will your dad require Thunderbolt? - as that could be a deciding factor towards which motherboards will suite.

Realize Asus has already unlocked the non k skylake chips with their mobos bios. Others are soon to follow. The thing I like with mini mobos is they tend to include wifi and bluetooth. Plus can you skirt customs and get them shipped from somewhere where the exchange rate is better on your end? I know VATs come into play in the EU.

Nope. :D his current I mac is pre thunderbolt im 90% sure.

While im a massive fan of Bus overclocking like the one on Asus and Azrock boards, I am not going to give someone whos primary need is stability a system with that overclock. It is experimental, it is not as stable and its quriky.

Same reason that I run crossfire with r9 Furies but I wouldnt make that for him because hes not an enthusiast, he just wants something that works out of the box.

I understand that, about the stablility. That being said, are there any good Euro manufacturers that you can just dump a graphics card into? Time, hassle plus the manufacturers warranty if the PSU or CPU craps out?

not sure... do you mean buying a prebuilt and then shoving a better card into it?

Nah I wanna build him a pc, and the "warranty" will be me fixing it if anything goes tits up. :D Also the UK has a generally pretty good and cheap access to enthusiast grade hardware. I can find 99% of what I need on Scan.co.uk for the same or cheaper prices as US.

Buying him one without a non integrated gpu and then just shoving a decent graphics card in it.

What a view miles of saltwater can change... even with the disadvantageous pound/euro exchange rates buying from the UK + shipping often is cheaper than buying from mainland EU =/

I am honestly not aware of any EU based manufacuturer of barebone PCs except ones for industrial applications. Only Medion (bought by Lenovo) produces systems in the EU but they are aimed at discount prices.. so built for a price.
