A Little Networking Help

First off let me just say I think I posted this in the right area. If not someone please correct me where it should be posted, thank you.

Alright I'm in a bit of a pickle here and I've been trying to figure out what's going on. My network is setup as such.

ISP (Cox)-Modem(Netgear something)- Router(Netgear WNR2000v3)-< Switch and a WAP- Clients

Now what happens from what I can tell is when me or my family download a lot of data the modem and the router stop talking to each other for whatever reason. The Modem is brand new, like a week old, the router is about 6 months. Just to note the old modem was doing the same thing. I took a look at the modem and it does have DHCP service inside it. Using the subnet of 192.168.100.x The router uses the subnet of 10.0.0.x. I'm unsure if it's a setting I changed to cause this, the ISP, or maybe the Router is about to kick it. Like I said only happens when I pull a lot of data.

Any addition information you need just ask. I've been perplexed by this for way too long.

Have a look at the QoS settings. If they are set up in such a way to limit/cutoff speed after a certain amount has been downloaded that could be the issue... That said in our office we had a d link wireless access point and for some reason when you started to download files it would just stop working, resetting it did nothing. we got it RMAd and the new one works fine...

I checked the QoS settings and they are blank. I'll look around for a "data limit" in the router maybe I overlooked it. I did do a factory reset on it and only changed the wireless settings and IP subnet.

connect directly to the modem and see if the same thing happens.

I'll try that when I get home and then I'll update you.

The modem may be a router all by itself. I saw an XFINITY consumer customer who had been given one box to be a cable modem, WiFi AP, router, switch, and DHCP server. So that may be causing issues. You might want to look into buying a new modem.

@Jonnyb,

I did as requested and it still conks out. I also purchased a new router and it also conked out. I believe this is my ISP Cox doing something by now it's odd because after I reset the router/modem all is well.

@K4KFH,

This modem is purely a modem. I took a look and I purchased it with that intent. So that's not the issue. Also this was occurring with my old router (5-10 years old) and it was purely a modem as well.

Thanks for the help both of you.

If the same thing happened when you were connected directly to the modem then I would have thought the problem is there. Can you get into the settings of the modem? I know you could with the router.

And yea if its a modem issue getting another router isnt going to help.

If its a modem issue I would have thought your ISP should replace it.

Our ISP would make us pay around 100 bucks for an older model. We purchased one of our own accord. I believe the problem is heat build up. I placed a fan inside the cabinet and it's been working flawlessly ever since. I guess the other one became too hot and blew up.

heh, interesting. glad its all working now.
