A good guide to learning FreeNAS

I’m wanting to build a cheapish NAS, and I can build something so much better with old server parts than an off the shelf home NAS unit. But I don’t want to buy the bits until I’m happy I can properly install and setup FreeNAS.
Now here’s the issue, I know nothing about FreeNAS or networking really for that matter. Can any of you point me in the direction of a good guide to learn from scratch?

Thanks
Ed

the best way to learn, is to just get in and mess around with it. You could read the FreeNAS documentation.

I have FreeNAS running in a vm atm as I thought I would try that, but the trouble is I don't think I know enough to be able to jump on. I don't know what much of it means.

I'v built about 15 FreeNas boxes for friends and family. Like @Dje4321 said, you realy need to jump in. I would make backups of any files you put on their (also the configs). You will brake FreeNas after a while. That usually happend to me when I was messing with permissions. It's a trial and error type of thing.
