Above is a presentation video shown by DICE at SIGGRAPH last year. It's demonstrating the new real-time radiosity lighting on the Frostbite 2 engine. Come to find out, this was not just some experimental tech that they were boasting; DICE is using this middle-ware lighting API from Geomerics called "Enlighten" on Frostbite 2 and will be seen in Battlefield 3.
To explain just a little, Enlighten is the first software of it's kind that is able to simulate global illumination for gaming environments on a large scale. It uses a very different method to do this in comparison to offline rendered scenes that can take a very long time.
Here is Enlighten being ran at a booth at GDC 10, they go through a number of environments and really show how useful it is.

Anybody else excited? If you were like me, you were frustrated by how terrible BC2 looked when it came to indoor lighting, you could blow a hole in the wall and no light would bleed through. With this new tech, Battlefield 3 is going to look far better than games out right now with real-time solution, and all done in real-time. It's not just DICE licensing this, tons of studios have begun using this.
