A Cheap Goobers LiteCoin Setup?

So as I come more active in here, I mined a LiteCoin (well I am in a pool so, really other people did the majority of the work and I got a coin over the course of a weekend)

If you've seen me posting in other LiteCoin threads, you'll know using my GTX 660ti AND my i7-3770k processors, I only mine (on a high end average) between 160-200, sometimes it drops to 130. My GPU alone is pulling average of 90-130, also this is my render/streaming/gaming PC lol so this prevents me from doing my normal work of producing YouTube content.

So I have a real old AMD CPU/mobo setup, has no RAM in it, and probably a 350-400wat generic PSU in it (this was my dads old store bought computer) I was thinking of taking this and throwing a stick of 2GB of RAM in it (cause I just want to GPU mine), putting my old 570 EVGA in it + an AMD card and make a nice LiteCoin mining machine, what do you guys think I should do with this POS machine? lol

Or maybe sell the EVGA Superclocked 570, use that cash + some out of pocket and get two really good AMD cards and mine that way? Thoughts and input, I'll also probably have to put a new PSU in it as well. So voice your opinions what you would do here!

I'd try and get two 5870s if you can, they seem to be at a bit of a sweet spot price-wised used at the moment.

Sweet, and do you think I should upgrade the PSU? I won't need more than a 2gb RAM stick right? Just GPU mining.

get a couple of 5870 if you cand find them cheap or a couple of 6870s. You can compare hashrates here https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison#wiki-ATI_AMD_GPUs to determine which is the best for the money. You will need a PSU upgrade, IF your going Crossfire i recomend no lower than 650W. (80+ of course.) And yeah 2 gigs of ram will be fine.

actually, you shouldnt be running crossfire or sli anyways, but coming from a person (me) who is mining a gtx560 and a radeon 7850 in one rig. you can definitely do it, however he will need a larger psu, and i would recommend getting an 80 plus bronze or more dont want to skimp on the psu

Yes 2x 5870s would be great but you will need to upgrade to at least a 700-750W PSU and as K1llampt said, don't skimp on that part or you could ruin your gfx cards :)

So two of you guys said a 650 PSU, Termhn, my man, says a 700.... Will 650 be fine if I go with the 5870s?? And I haven't heard of anyone using SLI, everyone has told me that they set it to where each card mines seperately. Is there a difference between this and running Crossfire/SLI.

But you all agree I should sell the 570 and get an AMD, I know I could probably get 200+ for my 570 on eBay, it's a little harder finding those AMD ones for cheap on eBay

Well based on the TDP that I just looked up it looks like 650 would be fine. It has a tdp of 188W so 2x 188 is 376 which leaves a lot of overhead :)

This is handy for times like these: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Well I just picked up the 80+ Bronze semi-modular SeaSonic 650 watt just now because Newegg was having a discount that ended...well today technically lol plus MIR, so I figured what the hell. Gonna steal a stick of RAM out of another rig I have, probably sell the 570 in hopes of getting a 5870, then I guess it can start? lol hopefully there is no issue with the motherboard. This thing is REALLY old :P

Also what do you guys think is the best money for card quality. I was looking on eBay and was thinking about a 6970.... Also on this site https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison#wiki-Nvidia_GPUs it shows the same card, but only difference being the clock/mem freq + the miner & it's settings, so is this just telling me that any 6970 (if I OC it to those settings and use the miner like that) will generate those hashes? Or how can I tell which 6970 is the best of the several listed?

The 5870 and  6970 arent that far apart in price, roughly the same, so was just wondering. A lot of the older generation cards that mine VERY WELL, are hard as hell to find online. Any other places to look for ordering second hand parts besides eBay?

6970 would be good as well and yes the difference between cards there is the OC and settings.

So I could just get any 6970, match the OC settings and Miner settings to those on that site and it should mine roughly the same? Also Idk which 6970 is better, this Gigabyte one I found with 3 fans on it, or the Sapphire with just two.

Yes, and either of those would be great id go with whatever's cheap but technically the one with 3 would be able to stay cooler without getting as loud if that's a factor to you.

Well funny enough that one is actually the cheaper one :) It's 300 bucks.

uhm... you can get like a 7950 -7970 for that range of price lol. also just saying i would mine with the 570 until you can sell it. thats what im doing with my 560. its in a rig with my 7850

Dude my bad, you're right. What I meant to originally post was I found a nice Gigabyte 3 fan 7950 for 300 bucks, not a 6970, Jesus I have been reading all these different numbers all night and I am lost. I think I am going to go with that, just cause the 7970 is like an additional 120 dollars. Seems like best deal for my money right now in terms of long term mining down the road.

Be careful, the new PCB revisions of the Windforce 3x cards are voltage locked, i have a non locke done though and it OC's like a dream and averages about 630 Khash/s at 1125 on the core.

I saw a couple of the 7970 were voltage locked, but what about this one? I can't tell/known how to know if the card falls under that category

So on another thread someone told me to get this board, but I ask, how will this work when I (way down the road in the future lol) want to use 3 or 4 GPUs to mine LiteCoins.... since if you run 4 it makes them go to PCI-E x4

Anyone able to explain?
