970 or 290X, which one should I buy?

Which card do you think I should buy, they're almost the same price here

SAPPHIRE TRI-X OC Radeon R9 290X 4GB for AR$ 6400.-

GIGABYTE GTX970 OC 4GB for AR$ 6245.-

If you game at a resolution >1080p (and might even be looking towards 4k gaming) then the 290x. If you're gaming at 1080p then whichever has the better features in your opinion. I personally would pick the 970 with the prices you listed.

Considering that the 970 is cheaper I would probably go for that.

If you want 4k, then definitely the 290x. For 1440p it's more of a tossup, I'd go with whatever has features you want, like Nohrellas said. And 1080p, again, is the 970 of course.

I wouldn't get the 290X. Look at the R9 290. It is just a bit slower than the 970 at 1080p, with an OC they are very similar, and at 1440p+ they are even closer and the R9 290 will even start to pull ahead. Especially with an OC. They can be had for a much better price than the 290X and are only a tiny bit slower like I said. Much better from a price to performance perspective.

So compare the R9 290 to the 970. IDK how the prices are there but in the states the 290 is usually about $100 cheaper and I think are a better value.

I will be gaming at 1080p, what derkrieger said about the 290 made a lot of sense to me, I can get a 290 in the AR$5000 - AR$5500 range, but there is a problem I think, and that's my PSU.

These are my current specs:

2 year old TX 650W Corsair PSU.

8350  @ 4.5 Ghz

MSI GTX 660 Ti

2 HDDs

H80i WC

Will a R9 290 be too much for my PSU?

I have that exact PSU.

The 290, 290x, and 970 should all be good on that power supply. I wouldn't do crossfire with the 290's/290x's, but I'm willing to bet you could do SLI 970s.

I only have a 7950 though, so I am not speaking from personal experience. Just what I've read about power consumption.

You have to take into account that he's running an overclocked 8350, that will need quite a bit more power than your more efficient 4-core. What's the power consumption on those again? 200-ish watts? So that's 200W for the CPU, 250W for the R9 290, yeah that should still be enough. Also, 52A on the +12V rail on that PSU as well so that should also be fine.

I run a Tri-X 290 on a 650w PSU it runs fine and I've had no issues with it. Considering that the Hawaii GPU's are much more feature rich and more open than Nvidia's Solution. i'd go with a 290 or 290X plus you get 3 or 4 Games. And Catalyst Omega that is coming soon looks promising as hell it really is worth it

No it doesn't use that much more power. He will be fine.

Well, I came to the sad realization that these 290 290x cards don't support DVI-I, and my secondary monitor only has an analog D-Sub connector... so it looks like I'm stuck with the 970 after all.

Thanks to all of you, you've been very helpful.

I had no idea, thanks!!
