900+ Benchmarks (RX 7900 XT + Comprehensive Benchmark Video Database)

Hey L1T community

I’ve been running a somewhat unusual Linux gaming setup for the past several years and wanted to share my findings since I haven’t seen much data on native 6K gaming on Linux.

Why 6K? Honestly, to see what’s possible and push the hardware to its limits. The XDR works surprisingly well on Linux (including brightness control), and I wanted to document real-world gaming performance at this resolution since almost nobody is doing it.

Key Findings:

  1. Native 6K performance: 30-40 FPS typical with max settings (RT disabled)
  2. FSR at 6K: Noticeable quality loss even in Quality mode - not worth it on this display
  3. Distro comparison: CachyOS vs Fedora showed no meaningful difference at 6K (completely GPU-bound)
  4. Practical approach: I either optimize settings for native 6K or drop to 4K for competitive games.

YouTube Channel: I’ve documented 700+ benchmarks at youtube.com/@GreenMinusBlue / https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNq7pDavJRTEjg3AOdcuMAg - mostly raw gameplay with FPS overlays. Fair warning: they’re data-focused rather than entertainment-focused, but if you want to see specific games at 6K on Linux, the data is there.

Questions I can answer:

  • XDR setup on Linux (it actually works! YES brightness control, even works!)
  • Per-game optimization strategies for 6K
  • AMD drivers/Mesa performance
  • Anything else about this setup

Happy to contribute and discuss!

Im sharing my Mangohud.conf benchmark file. EDIT: Sorry couldnt upload it here, but link is here: LimeWire: Share Files - Secure File Upload Platform (available for a week) the point is you only need to, copy and paste it into your /home/USERNAME/.config/MangoHud folder. Overwrite the .conf file thats already there.

It has my system on it, you only need to replace gpu and cpu name. The rest is automatic.

Here is how it looks

Guess i made it harder than it needs to be (Sorry) ill just upload the mangohud.conf file in pure text ready to be copy pasted. You only need to change the centered text, cpu and gpu information. All else is ready at size 90 font size. (Perfect for 4K and above) Change the font size to something smaller if you wish to. Lowest recommended for 1440p is 64 (Play around with the settings to make it suit your needs)

Decided to also share my hand-crafted gallium_hud config. In text format. Gallium_hud works with OpenGL only, as far as i know. Vulkan is not supported. Change the order to make it suit your needs and also change GALLIUM_HUD_SCALE=3 to make it suit your display. SCALE=3 is best for 4K and above. The parameters can be used both in Terminal and in the Steam Clients Launch Options. Doesnt need %command% at the end.

@GreenMinusBlue, Welcome to the forum. What are your Computer Specs? I stopped gaming on Linux because of the issues between Wayland and Nividia.

Thanks, Shadowbane. my specs are:
i5-146KF
RX 7900XT
1TB Nvme SSD
32-64GB RAM

What were those issues you had with Wayland and Nvidia??

I had a feeling your Graphics Card was an AMD graphics card. There was no way you would be getting the results you are getting if your graphics card were either an Intel or Nividia graphics card. To answer your question, the issue I have with the Wayland display server is that NVIDIA does not fully support the Wayland project, and the fact that most Linux distros are abandoning the X display server in favor of the Wayland display server has caused me a lot of issues taking full advantage of my monitors and graphics card. So you might say, since I like online games and most of my friends have family obligations, I don’t, I just gave up on gaming altogether. So far, I have been able to use Xwayland for all my display server needs, except for gaming.

It is indeed an AMD gpu i have and yes i wouldnt have gotten anywhere near the results ive documented on an Nvidia or Intel card. Even Intels ARC cards are not that mainstream in Linux yet, as far as ive read and it will take some time for it to catch up.

I do still have problems though on my AMD card, theres been a recent incident where on newer kernels, (Even LTS) there is a bug where everything goes black without leaving any trace in the logs. It says it might be a bad cable, because ive tried every amdgpu kernel parameter to force it too work, through those options in the bootloader., But to no avail.

Ive created an de-centralized version of my youtube channel, at gnulinux.tube. Link here: GreenMinusBlue GNU/Linux.tube Edition - GNU/Linux Tube too save the data elsewhere, since the total data of the youtube version, is quite high. Unfortunately i have a 200GB limit on the video data, but i couldnt find a better more FOSS alternative than gnulinux.tube. If anyone knows any better alternatives that is FOSS aswell, (Without a possible video data limit) feel free too share.

So ive re-branded my GreenMinusBlue YouTube Channel. The Youtube handle has gone from @greenminusblue too @linuxstresslab. Latest re-branding being Linux Stress Lab. YouTube will hopefully update it soon. Hopefully it stays at Linux Stress Lab, im tired of re-branding constantly. Ive probably had over 10-15 different names / brandings on my channel.

Im still looking for de-centralized options for my youtube video library data, ive uploaded too gnulinux.tube but its often slow and or down. Getting harder too use properly. Looking for unlimited video storage options, please let me know if anyone comes across anything, appreciate it, in advance.

New milestone hit!! 800+ Videos now and a Linux Game Lab Re-brand. Too find the channel @linuxgamelab is the new handle on YouTube. I also hope too update my gnulinux.tube channel but as there is a data limit i have to pick and choose which videos i should upload and which ones not too.

New milestone hit! 900+ Benchmarks and counting now. Also got a new display, no more Apple xdr. Im on an Alienware AW3225QF now. Also uploaded a few more updates on gnu/linux.tube, will upload more in the foreseeable-future.

So changed the channel name as there was someone else already using lgl on their name. New name is @LinuxTelemetry Now waiting for youtube to update the channel.
