Hello.
Are there any software engineers here, who recently did an upgrade from something like 8700k to a modern platform? I’m mostly looking for feedback and trying to assess feasibility of doing an upgrade. If not, I’ll leave some details of what I have and what I’m imagining in my head just in case of:
8700k, non overclocked
z390 itx asrock motherboard in NR200 case
2x32GB 3000MHz DDR4, one of the earliest models at this density
970 EVO+ nvme
3080 FTW3 (a good old evga)
I’m 99% programming in linux environment, and occasionally playing a few titles a year. While the machine is still okay-ish for the tasks since I’ve built it more than 5 years ago, I believe I want to get compile times a bit better. Doing things like rebuilding kernel, kubernetes distro, or bigdata stuff, i.e. quite large projects, take many minutes at the moment. What would be a good platform to jump on as of today? Is moving to 12-16 core Zen5 + 6000MHZ RAM makes sense?
I was in a similar situation when I went from a 7700K in a mini-itx system to a full sized 7950x build. Compile times are wonderful in comparison, but you need to deal with the heat output in the newer power hungry chips (both intel and amd). If you want to stay in a small case, it should be doable with an AIO and maybe limiting the max power a bit? (It’ll have a bit less burst speed, but long compile times should be similar)
In my case, brought over my old GPU (1080ti) and used the iGPU for the host system without issue until recently picking up a 6750x on sale. 2x48GB 6000 DDR5 dimms are also really nice for running VMs for work.
Nice, thanks for sharing.
What projects are you usually work on?
Regarding 2x48GB ddr5 - as of today is it safe to assume there are no headaches with such densities? I believe you still sacrificing some timings when going to higher memory volumes, no?
Yeah - I haven’t had any issues since I got them, but I did end up fiddling with the timings (I didn’t buy an EXPO kit). I think you’ll be fine as long as you stick with 2 sticks.
As far as big projects go, I occasionally fiddle with the linux kernel to try and figure out some bugs, but I haven’t had to in a while. I have a buddy who works on SCUMMVM, so I end up compiling that every few months to help test something.
Most of my work clients use the JVM, .NET stuff, or have embraced JS madness. Thankfully things there are nearly instant with my current setup, which I’m very happy about.
I have been eyeing this upgrade package for a while, thinking of pulling trigger on Black Friday. Small but premium components with a focus on low power.
This should boost my Yocto builds to below 1h and game fairly decently, however I am giving up perf for wattage.
This system is good enough to drive an RX 7900 XTX, though I am happy with a 7800 XT for the lower power and still adequate 1440p gaming Recommend 850W+ PSU, case is whatever works for you.
