Hello all. I have a Samsung 840 evo 250gb SSD that i got about 2 years ago that i use as my boot drive. It was a nice experience going from a regular HDD to a SSD in terms of in OS performance and the boot time of the system. As of a few months ago though randomly my boot times became insane. I have tested the time it takes to boot a few times today. I started my stopwatch from the moment i hit the power button. It would take roughly 15 seconds from hitting the power button to get the windows logo with the loading circle (windows 8.1). After that the screen goes black and stays black for another 35 to 45 seconds and then i am put at my desktop.
I know there was a issue with the 840 series SSD with degradation and samsung eventually released a firmware to fix that issue, I updated that firmware right after it came out. I have also did speed tests on the SSD and it performs exactly as expected in terms of read and writes. Its just that boot time that is insanely slow. Any ideas on why my boot is so slow and what i could do to fix this issue so i can enjoy fast boots again?
Well basicly, if you are running the latest firmware on your drive. And the read and write speeds are fine. Then you could look if there is a bios update for your motherboard, that might solve the issue.
Also, windows 8 and 10 have a feature called 'fast boot', that sometimes does the opposite of what it is obviously supposed to do. It's not to hard to disable. (and probably makes no difference in boot time for a ssd otherwise)
Yes, I'm thinking the same thing. It's not necessarily the SSD but Windows that's to fault.
@SmileAsTheyDie If I were you I'd try looking in the systems event viewer (control panel-->administrative tools--->Event viewer-->windows logs-->[System, Application, and so forth]). Disclaimer: there are going to be some warnings and errors even in a well functioning system. Look at the time when you booted and see if there are a whole stream of errors or such. Might give you something more to work with.
Under the system at the time of my latest boot i got 2 errors both tied to "AsusFanControlService":
"A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the AsusFanControlService service to connect."
"The AsusFanControlService service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
Those were the only errors present.
EDIT: I ran CCleaner on the registry but i already do that on a pretty frequent basis.
=\ Ok, I really just a have a few random things to try that are also pretty iffy. You could also try resetting the bios settings completely by popping out the battery or by jumpers. Just clear it through physical means and not through the software menu.
Unplug other internal drives and devices (other hard drives and optical drives) to make sure it's not something else causing the slowdown. maybe even plug the SSD into a different port on the mobo.
It seems unlikely to be a firmware problem if it worked fine for that long, but who knows? It seems like there were plenty of glitches happening with Asus boards and SSD drives a couple years ago.
Not that i can think of. I have 2 USB flash drives and a External HDD that i have used on my computer before but i originally used them long ago and i dont believe i have even plugged them in since this issue has started occuring.
The only thing i have added around the same time frame this issue started occurring (i dont know the exact time the issue started occurring outside of near the beginning of this year based on memory) was another SSD. (So my system consists of the 840 Evo 250GB Boot drive, a WD 1TB HDD, and a 850 Evo 1TB SSD) I tried unplugging my HDD and other SSD and booted with only the boot drive plugged in but that also did nothing.
Okay, could you disconnet those 2 usb flash drives and Extrenal HDD, and see if its booting faster then? Looks to me that the motherboard post proces takes a bit too long.
They aren't connected. Those devices are just the only USB devices that i own that i have used on my computer. I dont leave them connected and if my memory serves right they have not been connected for months now, longer than this issue has been occurring.
Did you disable this service? It sounds like it could be the issue ... I'm just interpreting this as 'The computer is waiting 30 seconds for this to start but nothing happened.'
Ah okay then its not an issue with USB detecting. You could ofc try a fresh re-install of windows, but that will be realy drastic and time consuming. The main thing that botters me is that you say it takes long before it passes post and start loading windows. You could ofc enable things like fast boot, change boot device priorities to your ssd first etc but yeah.
Well wouldn't after the windows logo with loading circle be the segment of windows loading? Because that's what takes the longest at around 35 Seconds of the boot. From the press of the power button up until when the windows logo with loading circle pops up only makes up 13-15 seconds of the boot.
I already have fast boot enabled (i have had it enabled since i got the SSD) and the SSD as been first in the priority since i got it aswell.
