8000G + B650i Aorus Ultra for mini-ITX build?

So we have

  • 10 month old review of the Gigabyte B650i Aorus Ultra mini itx board
  • 2 day old review of the 8700G/8600G cpus (which as of today you can buy online) but review used a larger mATX board

Would this be a good combination for a mini-ITX build or are there better mini-ITX mainboard choices for these CPUs?
(FYI Initially people though both of these parts might support ECC, but it looks like that is no longer the case.)

Other options for AM5 mini-ITX mainboards appear to be:

  • Gigabyte A620I AX
  • ASRock B650E PG-ITX
  • ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-I
  • ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-I

I was hoping to use an existing mini-ITX case and have a small build, but that mATX board in the second review seems like such a great deal! But with 4 DIMM slots would the resulting system end up with slower RAM? If I am ok with 64gb total would I be better off with 2x32 at a faster speed?

The Aorus board is really nice for a G build if you can fit it within your budget. I prefer it, myself, over the other boards since it has the most expansion ports (3x m.2 + 1x16 PCIe).

It is expensive however, compared to the A620. Otoh the Aorus board is almost certainly supporting an upgrade path to the Zen 6 APUs, and those promise around 3060 performance - aint gonna be that special in 2026, but it is there.

I would go for it personally if you think you will take that route. If you plan to make no upgrades then the 620 is perfectly adequate however.
