$800-$1000 PC Build

I'm planning on building a new desktop to use while in college. I plan on using it for playing games when I got free time and for programming, Linux, and possibly virtual machines when school work comes about (I'm a computer security major). I don't really want anything too crazy, just something that gets the job done pretty well and has good airflow and performance.

Monitor an os as well?
overclock?
Intel vs AMD vs dont care
air vs water
ect ect

Probably just this

Just wait for the after market 480s, you could also drop the SSD and get an i7 6700 potentially

I have an OS and monitor, don't care, I prefer air but water is fine too

Yeah, I have to wait for an Alienware laptop refund anyway (one of the biggest mistakes I made). Might as well get aftermarket cooler because reference usually kind of suck.

then I would go with what Streetguru said above its a nice build If you want the K parts you can fit it in well as for an air cooler you can go with a hyper 212 evo thats a good one or my favorite fan brand a Phanteks

Isn't really worth getting a K i5 over the non K i7, price ends up about the same, and you can't really beat 8 threads at 4ghz turbo

the motherboard is much better on the z170
plus you can always just stick with the non k part and upgrade latter to a K part
why would you ever get a non z### motherboard I dont know

Why would you need one for a basic work and gaming rig?

The biggest addition is more PCI-e/Sata and overclocking, but paying extra for overclocking isn't going to be worth it at all over getting an i7 or jumping to X99 from the 6700K

All the MSI VD boards have solid power delivery and USB 3.1 on board, there isn't much more you really need

More memory options, Better audio, Better LAN, USB 3.1 type C and A, and the ability to go to a K part if one goes on sale. well worth.
more options more better

With DDR4 you can fit 32gbs in 2 slots if you really need to

for audio, if one really cares about audio they'll probably just buy a USB DAC

Is there any 1151 board that doesn't support at least gigabit?

A type C adapter is probably going to be fairly inexpensive
$8 I guess it only has USB 3.1 speed on one side or something, but I'm sure there's a better option

And on that last front, even on a sale you can't get much faster than the 6700, at best with the 6700K you'll hit 4.5ghz which really isn't going to be worth the effort to get.
