$700 Workstation for Eagle Scout Project

Hello,

I am a life scout in the Boy Scouts of America. To achieve the Eagle Scout rank, I need to lead a Eagle Scout project for a non-profit organization. I choose to build computers for a company of my choice. I have already raised about $2200 and the organization wants 3 computers. For $700 I was thinking that it would be better to not get a graphics card since they will not utilize it, and instead just put that money towards a better mobo or cpu.

I am not currently as up-to-speed on the latest and greatest computer parts since I built my personal rig, kinda just lost interest in the new hardware. So if possible what would you guys suggest for a $700 rig for office use. The $700 has to include Windows 7 Professional, but not a monitor, keyboard, or mouse.

Thanks in advanced,

Good Luck I am myself an Eagle scout. Can you elaborate on the company and what specifically they do.

Is a rough 1st draft could drop price, I also added mouse/keyboard/speakers/Monitor in the build since I am guessing they need those too.  (This build is Bias slightly on some parts due to personal preference you can build cheaper and still have similar quality.)

Do you want everything ordered from one store, have you called around to see if you can get any deals on parts from stores since its for a non-profit and your eagle scout project.

I suggest you do this OP. I did this for my Eagle, and it definitely opens up your budget if you talk to a few local companies and explain what you are trying to accomplish. Bigger business' may help but there is an extra level of bureacracy to wade through.

I would also like to add that the rank is definitely worth earning. I still put that on my resume.

I am donating the computers to a company called ORT America. They provide a non-governmental education system for countries without them. They do not need keyboard/mice/monitors/etc. Fortunately I come from a fairly "well-off" family and if the computers happen to go over budget my grandparents and parents will pay the extra money.

Link didn't work

haha, i paid for mine, but mine was just a few posts in the ground.

anyhow, what is their specific use for the computers? if it's just office work, put together an itx setup with an i3 or pentium, using the iGPU

you can also got the AMD route, and use FM2+ A4's, which have ITX mobos available

Sorry about that, here's a new one: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Bosserest/saved/BdrRsY

i would def go the mini-itx route with an APU, sounds like a really cool project. good luck.

APU for sure, I probably wouldnt go Mini-ITX but thas just me.

What other task will be doing besides basic office use? You can build a pc for $400 if editing and games isn't involved

Link does not work !

Would drop the ssd for 500g hd, add CD Rom, and psu. Need a psu if you want it to turn on.

For the price 1tb is like $10 more if that compared to 500g hd.

So it's just the computer and Win 7 Professional?  Not really sure why you'd need professional, and windows 7 support is going to be cut relatively soon.

Quite well under $700.  I suppose the rest could be used towards tax or shipping.

runs on external power adapter, kinda why i recommend the ssd but i guess you dont really save that much power

Oem win 7 work just fine. The mobo will be it's life time component.
