To answer the question. No.

Get a good pair of headphones with a large sound stage. Most games have good positional/3d/binaural audio suround sound headphones are a bit pointless imo.

No. I bought a 7.1 capable headset and most of the time I just keep it turned off. Even for games it just sounds bad...
Better to just get a good set of headsets that sound good!

It's hard to get a decent true 7.1 rig going for headphones. Most of the time, it's all just simulated surround from 2.0 source such as the HyperX cans. Asus' STRIX 7.1 has the potential but I have zero confidence in their choice of drivers, maybe if they use the same outsourced drivers from the HyperX Cloud 1 & 2, I'd say get that in a heartbeat but wait on a review of it from either Tek Syndicate or HardwareCanucks. $385 for a STRIX 7.1 is a pretty good deal considering the beefy dac/amp it comes with.

I don't find it worth myself, since I haven't found games, that use 7.1, that I play. You could try either way 5.1 or stereo. I have stereo headset and it's fine for me.
I play CS:GO, BF3/4, Fallout 3 and some other stuff. I have no problem locating enemies with Stereo.
Also, @Logan recommended open headphones for good quality/locating stuff, but I would use closed/semi-closed ones, if you use skype or something, unless you have a good microphone.

Nope. Got a virtual surround headset and u have regretted it ever since. Used it twice.

A good pair of headphones will easily out do 7.1 headphones. They even do spacial awareness better. So much easier to locate someone near you in game with quality stereo rather than 7.1

a good alternative for 7.1 is planar magnetic headphones, I have not tried them, but I have heard they are good for music and gaming. My suggestion from information I have heard is the Mr.Speakers Mad Dogs. They are $300, which maybe out of your budget. A good budget alternative is the Superlux 668b ($30-50), and some replacement velor earpads ($10-30). I have that setup. They are semi-open and contrary to what I have heard are not treble cannons. A couple of times I have crapped myself because I thought my speakers were playing while it was actually those Superlux headphones. The surround feel is pretty decent on them, I can hear people really well. If there is substantial background noise it gets annoying. I DO NOT recommend the 1337 gaming headsets with LEDs, 7.1 Dolby digital surround, MLG footstep loudener, etc. They are usually garbage unless you get the $300 ones, but that is the same price as the Mad Dogs which are better.
