6D MAAAASSSIVE NOISE!((( Issues with video

Heeeey people!!!

Got a quick question. I am a videographer, but i feel like something is odd with my 6D

I shoot videos in my basemnt and get serious amounts of noise(

sooo the settings:
two bulbs (Gaus 6500k, 130wt gas lamps (no flickering)
LED christmas lights in the background for decor.

Cam settings:
FHD 30pfs, IPB/All-I
cinestyle picture profile,
ISO - 640-1200
TV - f2.8-f4
usually one stop underexposed for a purpose to create a gloomy look
WB is custom set to 6500k accordingly.

When imported into premiere, and do baaaaasic CC, i get MAAASSIVE amounts of color artifacts, noise, "8bit gradients in shadows, weird colors overall.
Settings are highest maching FHD format. Export also h.264 4.1 profile wth max everything other than a bitrate (usually I set it to 20-25mbs/sec)

So after export the video looks like it was shot on my old 600d and 3200 ISO....
I dont get it. FF, good aperture, high noise, and get serios artifacts.

Anyone know whats with that? I can try and use NeatVideo, but that makes the image even softer....

Lack of dynamic range. Overexpose it by a stop and you'll get more details in the shadows, then try to grade it in post the way you want. Keep in mind that you will still have some noise, but not as severe as before.

In camera you want to "Expose To the Right" like ivanvess says. There's a good wikipedia article called exposetotheright. Cinestyle is extremely flat and the noise is eliminated by grading the footage darker. For getting started with video instead of using a complicated profile like cinestyle, change the colour profile to standard or portraid, and then in the main menu go to the picture profile and lower the contrast to your liking. Experiment with what gives you the best look.
Cinestyle is useful if you control the lights in a studio environment and are very precise with your exposure, as you can squeeze extra dynamic range out of the footage by having it brighter - normal h.264 video throws away data when it is too bright or too dark - cinestyle makes it flat at the expense of noise and banding.
I only use cinestyle if I have an hour to set up my shoot (lights, microphones, props etc.) otherwise I use the standard colour profile at less sharpness, less saturation and less contrast!

Thaks man!) Will try that!)

Thanks mate! btw, do you know what is the best way to control shadows and contrast in Premiere?

I personally find that curves and brightness and contrst usually works best.
Sometime gamma in threeway cc does well

Also, check out this guys channel. He's talking about drone footage, but the same principle is used for colour correcting and grading dslr footage.

Honestly the 6d isnt that new.. and at the end of the day your shooting in a dark environment with uneaven lighting, The 6d has never been a killer FF tbh, I see what I would expect, as mentioned before you can try over exposing but then you hvae to deal with the highlights and modern day cameras struggle massively with recovering highlights, in this environment you would be better off with an a7sii

Do ytou have link to a video online?

Thanks)

Well, no. at this point no i do not. I would get a7sII/a7rII

if I had the budget. My next camera will NOT be canon.... Fucks are behing everybody for about 5 years.
I've already tried to overexpose by a stop, and results are fine. After all, it is logical to assume that in a brighter image there is more info in the shadows to work with. Plus, i can always put 100/80/60 wt bulbs to even out lighting.

Funny thing, is that I am engeneer and know light, but here i kinda dummbed it down a lot and did not consider much of what i should hahahahh

After all, even if I use ALEXA, utube compresess to a point at which video looks... well... average..

^ yes!

Agreed

haha

Think this would help as otherwise It just makes exposing correctly a nightmare despite the effect your obviously trying to make :)

You could try useing daylight LED colored bulbs and white balanced the camera. Is there a reason as to why you choose white colored bulbs? Are you filming with 3 light sources as for the basic light setup?

here is a video about 3 point light

Filmmaking 101 - Three Point Lighting Tutorial

How To Light For Darkness!

yes there is. Basement is very yellow. Using any warm light scources would saturate skin too much and i would get all kinds of weird color artifacts. I am using a 2 light scources. Dont have more.

Also, day light gives natural colors, good exposeure and, i like how it looks)

You can always Color Correct the footage in post. Would you use any gels or thin sheets of paper to change the color of the light or bounce light of different color.

What do you use for your light setups?

I use LED flood lights with clamp lights, quite cheep and works wonders.

well, at the top I get a gaus 130 wt bulb with a baking sheet as a soft box to avoid hard shadows. As a second light scource i use regular desk lamp with 100wt gaus bulb with which baking sheet to get a difused light. I dont use more, because I want to get a grunge look, but at the same time, give it a fine quality and feel.

what kind of lens are you using?

24-70 2.8 @ 2.8 -4

Now ill be shooting at either 2.8 or 3.2. Sharpness does not add really unless its like f8, even then, nasty h.264 or the YouTube compression kills everything. so I'd rather be shooting with lower ISO and higher DR than a "sharper" aperture but about a stop less of DR.

I want to get something wide with 1.4 but there is only 24mm, and then suer wide fixed lenses... I need 20-30mm fast lens.... But its either a sold kindney or super wide(

You can't really get more dynamic range. It's the same no matter if you shoot with f2.8 or f8. You can only get more detail in the the highlights by underexposing or in the shadows by overexposing, you'll get crushed shadows or highlights either way.

Only thing you can do to get more detail and dynamic range is to record raw 14bit video with Magic Lantern, which the 6D can do very well, but postprocesing is kind of a nightmare, you can only record 7 minutes on a 32 gb cf card and you need very fast cards.

Take a look at Magic Lantern firmware, it's awesome and you can do a lot of stuff with it, even recording h264 video with a much higher bitrate.

Hi!

Yes. I know everything you said to a point of engeniring numbers and what causes them.
As for ML, I knew about it when it was in the developement stage pretty much. I never used RAW video because of the stupid bitrate and amounts of post.

I said it b4, i'd get a7 camera. S/R/Sii/Rii IF i had the buget.
I will NEVER EVER use canon again for video. Its awful for what everybody else is offering. GH7, sony, fuck GOPRO does better daylight video than canon.....
I am pissed at this((
they say "Harrro, if you aa into videeeoo, get ouaa ceenee line cameeraaaas!" Screw them! Why should I spend around 18k for c300 mkII if I can get 2 a7Riis TWO!!!!!!! A7Riis!!!!! TWO!!! Fully loaded, a crap load of cards, some lights, lenses (well, canon does em better, not gonna lie) and still have about 2-3k for a PC that with CRUUUUSH and slash data like soviet uninon crRRUUUSHEDD hahahahah

Anyways, i got your point) thanks) I am a little overwelmed with this subject hahaha
