I can't get it under budget...
It will be used for solely for 3D modeling and CAM... I don't have a preference on AMD or Intel, but I know the i5 runs it all well...
It must include monitor, keyboard, mouse, and ac networking card (or motherboard support, but mobo support is expensive)...
1 GB DDR5 seems to run Solidworks fine... I'd love to splurge on a GPU but their's no way I can convince the owner to go for it... (good deal on MSI 7870 ghz edition at $149)

as an alternative, this is what the build is competing against...
have fun packing all that into $650
AMD is more bang for your buck. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2jdbN Job done.
I understand AMD is more bang for buck, but that processor, after looking at reviews, has bad points specifically at graphic processing... which is the primary point of the computer... I'm already making consolations to get an i5 instead of i7 and throwing the GPU under the bus... I'd be happy with a FX 8350, but the purposes I'm using the computer for are very CPU intensive...
how are AMD's at overclocking, anyhow?
yano what, forget the budget... build the lowest cost cad/cam system you'd feel comfortable with for the next 5-10 years...
Best news ever... There's a 24" monitor sitting upstairs in storage!
Pick your poison... I'm 100% positive I can cram the OS, Mastercam, and Solidworks on a 120GB SSD and use the NAS for program and 3D model storage...
$650 Budget...
