Lately while playing some CS:GO I noticed it getting choppy from time to time, at some point it became so annoying I was trying to find out what it was and I instantly before checking blamed my HDD. I got a weird surprise as I noticed that on idle I get about 6.4GB of RAM used out of 8GB. It started today and I really don't know how to fix it, I was reading that most people with this issue were using my Motherboard and what fixed it for them was updating the Killer Network Software which actually is up to date. It's a "MSI Z97 Gaming 5" if needed.
Check out your running background processes, my wild guess is that it could be svchost taking allot of ram. This is mostly caused by windows update service.
If it's windows 10, my money is on system memory compression. Next time your ram fills up like that, have a look at whats using it in task manager. May have to scroll down a bit. I've delt with that since earlier this year. There is a work around out there somewhere for it, but you would have to redo it every time it updates I think. If not, you will just have to keep restarting once in a while to refresh it. More ram will reduce how often you would have to restart but if the system has been running a while and you have been doing alot of things, the memory compression thing will fill. I have 24GB of RAM, and I still have to restart once in a while.
Come over to Linux, I've never used more then 2G of ram wile doing day to day stuff. I was using about 6GB at idle on Win 10 too, must be the Cortana botnet.
Yea sure "memory compression thing" what a great way to obfuscate cortana botnet activities chalking it up just as "this new feature"! Lol I'm with Iron_doc it's using you for a fool, taking your machine as their own to do whatever they want with!
I'm making good progress on my win10 botnet destroyer / disabler! I just have to finish it and find the perfect right time to release it so it has at least a bit of longevity. I'm trying to make it in a way that will be difficult for them to just fuck it up with a quick patch! :)
Did you use ramdisk software before? it could be reserving a bit of ram. I know I uninstalled a ramdisk software but it was still reserving it. I had to install it again and remove the rammdisk for it to appear less. My brother windows 10 machine with ramdisk off takes only 1gb ram. Mine takes 6gb on idle, we're both on 32gb system. yea so maybe reinstall remove audio drivers like those realtek and such too on startup.
I went from 9gb down to 3.3gb idle taking down services and that hidden ramdisk.
So now it became worse, 7.5GB out of 8 at Idle and I can't find anything doing this at the Task Manager. I've restarted my PC and even left it off for 1 hour and then started again to see this happen again.
I am focusing on games, mainly Counter-Strike:Global Offensive and more demanding titles like The Witcher 3. From what I know Linux isn't really optimized for games YET and software like Wine etc. isn't making it much better because of the crashes and getting lower performance in-game. I was thinking a lot about this but ended up with sticking to Windows 7 and since I tried Win10 at release I missed the look and so on which made me go back to Win10. I know that Linux will take over the desktop someday but it's to early Imo.
Both found something, ADW found something called "csastats" and RogueKiller found a PUM (for Potentially Unwanted Modification). Removed both, also used this https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases/ to get rid of the Win10 included software like Xbox et,c. and everything is fine now. If it'll happen again, I'll let you guys know by commenting on this topic.
So yeah.. I've ran a test with those programs I got recommended and it didn't find anything. I noticed that this happens after about 1-2 hours of CS:GO and stays then till I restart, I didn't have such issues before this crap Anniversary Update which also included the latest patch "KB3176938". As before, no software to be found eating all this RAM in the Task Manager.
It seems like the OS isn't forgetting whatever cache CS:GO needed on the ram after exiting the game. Perhaps just clear stand-by ram cache using RAMMap.
I wonder what kind of SSD OP runs though, if any at all. Because if he does have an EVO maybe it's the Rapid Mode which uses a portion of the RAM for cache. Just a wild guess.
