$500 gaming PC build. Need help with remaining parts

My friends laptop finally gave out so he decided he'd get a new desktop and maybe try PC Gaming, and now we need to convert him to the Glorious PC Master Race lol.

We already have the storage, disk drive, and case (Cooler Master N200). But we still require the rest of the build. Some suggestions on the parts used in the build would be helpful. The budget is $410 as of now and not a dollar more. What would be best: going the APU route or CPU+GPU?

Still in need of:

1)Motherboard (mATX/Mini-ITX to fit in Cooler Master N200)

2) CPU (or APU if better at this pricepoint)

3) GPU (if not choosing an APU)

4) Ram (He'd prefer 8gb if possible)

5) Power supply

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3OyRa You have the budget since storage and the case are taking care of to fit a cpu+gpu and not have to go the apu route

What exactly is he trying to do with this system?

He needs a desktop that will last, and some gaming on the side. And that link shows and FM2+ motherboard but an Athlon processor, not sure if those are compatible?

If he need's a desktop that will last then he might need to widen his budget a little bit.Oh and sorry for the late reply I just forgot about it and remembered it after a little while.

That's his budget. Either let me build him a custom desktop for this price, or spend his money uselessley on another crappy laptop.

At this point, I have a build sort of worked out.

GPU: Radeon 7770

CPU: FX 6300

PSU: EVGA 500 watt

RAM: 8gb Corsair Vengeance

Any changes anyone would recommend for this build?

At this point, all I would need is a decent mATX mobo, preferrably with USB 3.0 and a few fan connectors.

Heres my two cents dont let form factor dictate performance. full atx case 6300 a 270 a little extra money ( like 50 dollars ) will make a world of difference. Mow some yards or something. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Freaksamcker/saved/4Lsf

I have a pretty dim view on the athlons and the apus. The price for performance money is on the 6300 and a 270. Your at a crossroads where you can have a really good internet surfer or for a little more money you can have a gaming machine. Take the extra step. It will make a world of difference.

Well, a few days ago we were stuck with $420, but I managed to convince her mom to raise the bar. Did I mention everything had to be from Amazon...

That is an FM2+ motherboard. I don't think that's compatible, and the processor is somewhat outdated. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Its compatible, x4 740 is a FM2 chip. For your budget what do you honestly expect?

Ya, you have the idea. personally Amazon is not such a good place to purchase from. High prices more than make up for free shipping but that may be because i am not part of the club. Newegg has always been cheaper with really good customer service ( at least for me ) I recommend you shop around.

For power supply I've seen many people, such as the guy on this site http://toptengamer.squidoo.com/building-a-budget-500-gaming-pc-vs-a-console, recommend the Corsaif CX Series 500 watt. I think you can find a good rebate for it to cut the cost down too.

Intel i3 + R9-270 build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/hF6BhM

AMD Athlon 760K + R9-280 build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qTfpmG

There are no properly decent mATX motherboards for the AM3+ (FX) socket, so an FX build is out the window.

Don't underestimate the Athlon 760K. Its a very capable quad-core gaming CPU for what it costs and can be overlocked.

Slightly edited 760k build for all Amazon parts.

If that + tax/shipping/whatnot is too high, go for an R9 270.

Yeah, I usually try to pick a motherboard with 4 ram slots for easier upgrading, but it doesn't always fit the budget. In this case it would be pushing the cost a little. Would make sense to grab a little bit cheaper motherboard if it means being able to afford the R9-280.

I'm curious how far the 760K could be overclocked and if it would be enough to drive a 290/X with minimal bottlenecking - that it would make such a build worth doing. Should be fine in most games with a 280 though.
