5.1 or 7.1 system need advice

Just upgraded to a Asus Hero Maximus VII and the 8 channel audio in the back has been giving me an itch that needs scratched.  Currently I'm using 2 dirt old Bose full range speakers and an ancient Realistic stereo receiver.  I'd like to have at least a 5.1 system and have no idea where to start.

I've been throwing around a few different options and have no idea what to do.

Option 1:  Just grabbing a quick PC 5.1 system and plugging it into the back of the computer.  However, all of the speakers look so small and wimpy compared to my 2 Bose full ranges and actually feels like a downgrade.

Option 2:  Grabbing a home audio setup with a receiver.  Though, I know next to nothing about home audio solutions.

Option 3:  Grabbing a sound bar.  Build a few boxes for car speakers, and putting RE Audio FR or X series speakers in them. I'm extremely familiar with car audio and I know the RE Audio speakers would sound amazing, but my ignorance of home audio about the only reason this is even an option.  Building the boxes would be a huge pain; let alone finding a receiver that would put out enough power and be compatible with the oms of the speakers.

Fancy bells and whistles on the receiver mean absolutely nothing to me as long as it puts out a powerful and clean signal, has a volume knob, and has a power button. Though, volume per channel would be nice.

I would prefer option 1 or 2, as long as someone could provide me with decent options.

Budget: $500-$600 give or take.

What are you looking to use the surround sound for? what is the size of your room?

Fairly small room, would be used mostly for gaming, movies, and music.

I would just pick up a pc 5.1 system. I doubt 7.1 has enough room to really make any difference, and with a smaller room the power from a decent pc 5.1 set up should be more then enough to give you a good experience.  ///////////EDIT: A quick look on pcpartpicker I would probably go with the Logitech z906. I had an old 5.1 Logitech set up like 8 years ago and like it.

If you are serious about music stick with either stereo or 2.1

the more speakers you have the lower their performance per dollar

He said movies and that alone makes the 5.1 worth the investment over 2.1. I probably wouldn't use them for gaming though and music doesn't really need the surround. So if you dont watch a lot of movies that actually have 5.1 sound I would probably just get a good set of monitors.

z906 only has 3 channels on input leading me to believe it is just a glorified 2.1.  My motherboard has 8 output channels, I'd like to use them.

Why whould 3 3.5mm plugs only be 2.1? I mean stereo is only plug in with 1 in 3.5mm cables. ((one for front left/right, one for rear left/right, and one for center/sub) )

my bad... looked like RCA.  Think I'll just go with that.
