4k on a 7870

Hi friends,

Before somebody rips my face off about performance while gaming, let me say that my intended use of a 4k monitor is to have the extreme pixel density even at 28 inches for general school work and hobbycomputes. I was wondering if my 7870 will run at full load and catch fire just at the desktop and using various programs if I were to purchase this dell 4k tn monitor?

When I decide to get back into the games, I can always run a lower resolution, or use other monitors. (Plus I play indie games n stuff as opposed to AAA titles.) My purpose of using this is for programs and online classes. (Gon be sittin here a while.) I don't think the tn will bother me, heard great things about this particular display.

I was at an engineering camp a few months back at a college campus, and one of the courses was in a computer lab. They had a 27inch 1440p and it was nice having that in my face. Made me think of how an upgrade would be like from my current dell 23inch thing.

Thanks people of paradise.

You shouldn't have any problems at all running standard 2D rendered graphics in 4K with the HD7870. I would say the HD7870 wouldn't be sufficient enough for 3D rendered graphics at 4K though. It has a severe lack of texture memory and the GPU just doesn't have enough Compute units to drive 3D rendered graphics at 4K without considerate frame drops.

If you're just talking about doing school work, watching videos and general computing. No gaming. You'll be absolutely fine. You'd prob be fine with the Intel integrated graphics for that matter.

IMO 28in is no good for 4K. It is too small without scaling and with scaling you lose the space and Windows blows at scaling. 27-28" is perfect for 1440p IMO. I think one of those would be a better choice.

BTW You didn't like a Dell monitor. You linked a Samsung. Wendell reviewed it and it wasn't the best. The AMH A399U is a better choice IMO. It is a bit more but also much larger.

Oh yes, I now remember that review of the A399U, but I don't feel comfortable having a computer monitor bigger than my tv in the living room. Heh. Thanks for your response.

I'll continue searching. I decided to find a monitor with an ips display. Perhaps the ROG swift. Thin bezels, nice stand, ips, and 144hz. I wouldn't be able to take advantage of gsync with my amd card though. Too many options.

Just get a Korean 1440p monitor like a Shimian or XStar They are cheap and very very good. That would probably be your best bet.

Alrighty thanks a lot. I'll review all the old videos to get recommendations.
