i have a friend who wants me to build him a new gaming PC for ~$2300 and was going to use his 60" 4K 120Hz TV as a monitor. Is that a good idea? Or would he be better off with a 27" IPS Monitor?
It is really hard for most hardware to drive 4k right now. Some expensive solutions can do it but I am uncertain that he would be satisfied with it. That could change significantly later in the year as new hardware and APIs get released. You could play any games that are too hard to drive at 1440p though.
I was browsing a certain popular pc subreddit and there was someone with both a 4k 32" & 24/27" 144hz 1080p screen.. the point being that you can have the best of both worlds, high detail and productivity on one, with certain games no problem at 4k and the other screen a much easier load on the GPU driving 100+fps for twitch FPS shooters.
probably works out cheaper than a massive 60" 4k screen too and there would be more resolution and more room for activities .. so much.
He already owns the 60" TV.
Here is what I put together for his "ultimate" gaming rig at current parts and prices. it came to just under $2300.

Crossfire doesn't work in some games.
Also, an NH-D15? In a case with a huge side window like the 730T? Eek.
Sorry, got mixed up between 730T and 700D.
I hope you like brown.
easy to change the fans to the industrial grey ones. I dont think you know the 730T. It does not have a massive side window. The 700D does though.
Does his 4K TV have a DP1.2 port? If not, you'll need a GPU (or GPU's) with HDMI 2.0. As far as I know, there aren't any DP1.2 -> HDMI 2.0 released yet.
no clue
