4K Gaming Controversy

Sorry for the terribad grammar. _>>

Hi guys firsty im a new poster here, watch The Tek all the time, i know my way arounda  computer well enough also but as time has gone on my usual appoach of purchases in order to repair has gotten alot harder with living costs rising.. that said i upgraded my monitor and graphics card here is my specs and problem.

i7 920 @ 4.0ghz

asus p6x58d-e

12gb corsair xms3 6x2gb @ 1603mhz 0.1v oc

samsung 240gb pro ssd

2x western digital 500gb 7200rpm storage

ocz silent true-600w psu

Samsung uhd590 28 inch 4k Monitor dp 1.2 cable single tile.

asus dcu2 OC R9 290X 4gb - pci-e 6+2pin and 6pin daisy chain powered. (no power issues)

Haf-X coolermaster case front/side in back/top out fan setup

After 1 week of playing ultra @4k in ESO it has started resetting the pc randomly 1-2hours at first then randomly 10 mins to 1hour

after then or sometimes not. also just today ESO minimized, just before i saw a bubble with your graphics driver stopped responding

pop up, then blue, pink, white and green fullscreen pixels although mumble was still working push to talk,

the graphics card itself is set at 4.7% downclocked. the power draw at the wall is always 237-238W.

i noticed after googling alot it may be my VRM maybe overheating as well as my southbridge chip (i think thats it) the finned

heatsinks on the vrm were very warm, the south bridge was too hot to keep my finger on ( graphics card is about 3mm from the bottom

corner of it too close, i know but the 2 x16 slots are right next to the cpu and next down from that putting the card either top

corner or bottom bottom the the small heatsink.

can any1 suggest any ways to stop the problems?

well usually when the GPU Drivers begin to stop responding its due to a bad overclock. i don't think its neccesarily the GPU acting up cause that card was made to handle high resolution gaming. and it can't be your PSU either cause 500w is enough to power a system and a single GPU assuming there isn't huge overclocks on the components.

have you tried setting your GPU to stock settings and trying to play again? cause the only thing i can think of that has potential to be a problem is the CPU or the PSU or the actual game itself.

Is it possible it's a PSU issue? Based off your CPU, I would guess your system is a few years old, and at least from my understand OCZ isn't among the most reliable of PSU manufacturers.

thanks kat, the problems were occuring with the stock settings which is whqat promped me to downclock it, the blackout restarts hasnt happened again yet. i wondered about psu but the draw at wall hasnt exceeded 238w at any time even in a huge frame load @ ultra 4k ill try and keep testing different things and let you guys know if anything changes.

You have to make sure your PSU has enough amperage rating for both your graphics card and your CPU. A cheap 500W PSU might have 36-46 Amperes, but split over 4 rails instead of a single rail. This is not enough amperage to properly power both the CPU and graphics card when they are both being used at the same time. Daisy chaining PSU PCI-e connectors is a horrible idea and most certainly will cause power draw problems for your graphics card.

ive checked into it its the stealth xstream psu as stated a true 600w. i am aiming to find a molex to 6pin cable somewhere in my cuboards to alleviate the 18.75 ampere load downward. its purely because the psu didnt have a great deal of connectors and isnt modular that i havent so far although i was running a 6970 for a year or so overclocked and no problems and that was a power hog

An R9 290X uses more Power than an HD 6970 and has almost twice as many shader units. 18 amperes is not enough power for an R9 290x. You should be drawing at least 300W of power just by running a game at a full 4K display, less if at 1080p.

im running it downclocked too.. reckon theres anything else I can do without spending cash?

actually ive not had any problems since moving my wires around abit 6pin etc seems ok for now thx for the feedback tho guys
