4k 144hz Monitor with KVM help

Hi there,

I’m getting a bit desperate with some monitor/kvm issues…

I’ve been living happily with a Level1Tech 1.4 Display Port KVM Switch - Single Monitor - Two Computer for close to 2 years now - happily ran everything at 1440p /144hz.
I’ve got a personal gaming PC and a work issued laptop on my desk. Really loved this setup with your KVM!

I had to go for a quick/forced monitor upgrade in November…
Likely not the best or most rational choice, but I wanted to try a 4k 32’ setup and found a decent price on an Asus PG32UQ (4k @ 144hz) from Amazon.

Immediately ran into issues with flickering and monitor outright failing to show signal at higher refresh rates.
All good, read up online about the need for better cables - fine, ordered 3x Club3D 1m cables.
Now my desktop PC seems to work fine as expected through KVM - 4k @ 155hz even - beautiful.

The issue seems to remain while trying to connect to my work laptop (Dell Precision 5550 with Quadro T1000 - has a native 4k screen). Kind of important as this is where I spend most of my time at.
To try and make this work, I also got a good dock (CalDigit TS4) as this thing only has USC C ports (2x TB3 and another regular C type).
I don’t expect or care about high refresh rates here, I know TB3 will not run this at full… 60hz would be plenty for the work that I do on crunching numbers and sending e-mails.
When this attempt at a setup failed, I also tried buying a Club3D DP to USB C cable to try and go directly from KVM to Laptop without the dock…

When I try going through KVM it just shows No DP Signal on display. Oddly enough Windows seems to recognize that I have a monitor plugged in - can change resolution, refresh rate, move stuff over there etc.
Still no signal on the monitor itself. Lowering resolutions / refresh rate does nothing. The signal seems to be going to my computer, but nothing is coming back to my display.

It does work at 4k/60hz when I plug it in directly from my monitor to the dock or that DP to USB C cable (without KVM), but even this occasionally produces some flickering at times.
I’ve tried all 4 cables and they seem to be able to deliver 4k/155hz to my desktop… Could this still be a cable issue?

I’ve also updated all the firmware and drivers I could think of - monitor / dock / TB on my Laptop yet still no cigar :frowning:
I’m running real short on time to request a return for the monitor and I’d really appreciate any ideas what else I could try here.

With regards,
K.

If I read your message correctly, you may still have some things you could try to help further identify the problem.

Were you able to reproduce the problem by connecting to your previous monitor or a different one? I understand your upgrade path might make this into an apples to oranges comparison.

Have you also tried lowering the refresh rate to something like 30Hz? If not in your OS, then through the OSD menu on your monitor. If lower refresh rates do the trick here, that helps further identify the problem.

Are all the new cables the same length? Have you tried swapping the cables between the desktop and laptop? Sadly, not all cables are brought into this world equally. You might see quality differences even though you ordered them together.

Even swapping which ends goes into the KVM and which goes into the monitor could make a difference, if the cable is somewhat faulty, as it may electrically use different parts of the wire and fail differently or not at all. Display signals are extremely sensitive.

Hope this helps!

Fibbr brand fiber optic cables are even lower loss. Caldigit aree by far the best docks out there. Moshi usbc to dp cables are the best usbc to dp

Thank you for your insights… sounds like the cable could still be the issue :expressionless:
Will give it another try… it’s starting to look like quite a cable collection I have going here…

There was also an nvidia dp1.4 firmware update thats an optional install. See if that applies to the t1000 also?

I know its likely a cliché to you by now, but seems like this was indeed the fault of cables… Got a delivery of 2x Fibbr 1m long cables today and it seems to finally also work with my laptop (going through CalDigit TS4).

I may be a bit stupid, but it does seems like you may end up needing to spend half the price of your high end monitor to get a good dock / high end cables if you dare running at the limit of DP 1.4.

A bit disappointed that Club3D cables weren’t pulling their weight… and I’m afraid to move or breathe in case something breaks again.

At any rate, thank you for reading my rants and encouraging me to try yet another cable.
Have a lovely week!

It might not even be real club3d; two different dudes in germany got club3d cables that seemed real but the packaging was for sure not legit, pictures posted here. I wonder if club3d fakes have infiltrated amazon because they cost more and, for most people, if you have a decent cable you label as club3d who, except the few who need htat specific brand, would even know they’ve been bamboozled?

something about the last 6 months has seen a sharp decline in the quality of copper cables in general imho
