I'm deciding on parts for a new computer I plan to build in about 2 months or so. I want a great video card setup that can handle any game, but is the 4870X2 really worth it for around $600 when you could potentially CF 4850's for $300.
You could tri sli the GTX280 if you really wanted to handle any game. Do what ever you think is the most cost effective man. A single 4850 can already handle all the games out now.
Last I checked, the 4850's were around $174-200. But I digress;
From what I'm getting out of the early benchmarks, the 4870 X2 almost as good as just two 4870's in CrossFire, which is around $50 more expensive than one X2. Remember, you'll be able to put two 4870 X2's in your system if you have a CrossFireX mobo, and four 4870's in a AMD 790FX, either one should be one of the best(if not the best) setups graphically. Just make sure your PSU has enough wattage and PCI-E connectors and you should be good.
CF two HD 4850's if you have a CF certified mobo. Otherwise, wait/save up for a 4870X2. That's what I would do. xD
Well I would love to get a 4870X2. But I'd like to spend around 1500$ (1600 if needed). I'm having problems with trying to get a great videocard, some ddr3, and a intel nehalem (looks awesome!). I'd love any of your help trying to put together a rig for around that much. So far I'm thinking this though. Any parts I can change to get a better video card?
Setup:
Sound Card - Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy SE - $29.99
CPU - Intel Nehalem Bloomfield - $284
Mobo - Intel DX58 (Neccesary for Nehalem CPU, not socket 775 anymore) - $250 or so
Memory - Patriot Dual Channel Viper 4096MB 1333MHz - $192
CPU Fan - I'm guessing it's going to be around 40-50$
Case Fans - Thermaltake 120mm - $30 (for 3 of them)
Primary HDD - Seagate Barracuda 7200 250GB - $60
Secondary HDD - Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB - $75
Chassis - Ultra Black Aluminus ATX Full-Tower Case - $70
PSU -Ultra X3 800-Watt Power Supply (Modular) - $200
VideoCard - Around $300 Left
Why bother with that soundcard? doesnt make any difference with the onboard on that motherboard.
ok, but that's still not enough to get a 4870X2, I've heard they are going to be around $600.
well, the only way i could think to cut cost would be to change the cpu and mobo, because those are REALLY expensive, and nowadays cpu doesnt matter as much as the gpu, so just get a fairly high end cpu, an awesome gpu, and a motherboard for like 100 bucks
dude the 4850s would still not be able to dish out the raw preformance that the x2 can. not even crossfire 4870s will match it but they will come close. but as said before the 4850s would handle the games out right now but if you want a card that will last you maybe even a year or two get the 4870x2.
aparently even the 4850X2 might beat the GTX280, maybe you should look at the 4850X2 when its out (if it's not already)
performance wise i think it would be hard to justify the extra money unless you plan on further upgrading. if thats the case get the 4870x2 or 4850x2
Here's the video that's perfectly related 2 this question. Should be the best answer, only to me tho:

Also, don't look 4 the GTX280 anymore. The single 4870x2 will kick it out of the competition. Besides, the single GTX280 costs even more while u can get the 4870x2 4 less price on performance dependent.
@Destroyed007
You are totally right.
I was looking for an older necro to go along with the april fools shenanigans, but I couldn’t pass up responding to this lol
i disagree!
