Sexy.

Why not just buy a 4 year old tower off some guy on craigslist for $70 and put in a new SSD? Throw Linux on it. Easy peasy $150 office PC that will run spreadsheets and word processing flawlessly.

$406.58 base total without rebates or discounts. Leaves room to upgrade SSD size a bit, or find a cheap Windows key if you can't stand to use linux. If you go through the trouble of rebates etc you could even have enough left over to put a monitor in the build and be under budget.

I have extra windows keys that's not a problem.

So depending on your needs, double down on RAM and go for 8gb, or try for a bit more space on the SSD.

Nah. With Windows 8 4GB will get you by fine. More SSD space is a better option imo.

That's why I asked if there was network storage available. If there is, and you don't really need the internal storage for much more than a boot drive and small application storage, I'd go for the RAM. Otherwise I agree 100%.
