I'm planning on purchasing a new GPU in the next month or so. I want to spend around $300 but am willing to push that to $450. I had a 390X and from what I can tell the RX 480 and the GTX 1060 aren't THAT much of an improvement over that in terms of gaming performance.
I'm mostly looking between a 980Ti, Fury X and GTX 1070...
I will be gaming at 1080p, maybe upgrading to 1440p in the future (year or so). My main concern is noise. The card I had before was super loud, even under quite low load. Which card is my best investment? I'll be keeping an eye out for price drops and sales as well since I'm not in any real hurry to get a card right now.
zotac gtx 1070 amp edition
AMP extreme is good, EVGA FTW is good, and it's 2 slot, not 2.5 like the zotac
EDIT: To specify, Im talking 1070
A 480/1060 will be a little slower in many titles than a 390X. The 480 especially.
Really around this budget it makes sense to get a GTX 1070. It really is a very good card. It should be cheaper but still the right by around this price.
If what you have is close to a 1060/480.. could always wait for the rest of the cards to come out, or maybe a price drop. Or wait until the next generation all together honestly sounds like you've got a pretty good setup as is
The 1070 is the fastest of those three right now (DX11). As long as you can live with 4GB video memory the Fury X is probably your best bet in the long run (DX12/Vulkan).
Disclaimer: Fuck Nvidia!
My issue is just that it sounds like I have a vaccuum cleaner running next to me when I game and I'd like something quieter. In terms of performance, yeah the 390x can do whatever I need it to I just tend to game on my laptop because it is so much quieter.
I am keeping an eye out for sales and price drops on the other cards though.
The 1070 seems to be cheaper than the Fury X in most cases. I saw one from Sapphire for $400 though. I'm looking for "the long run" because I'm not going to be upgrading again any time soon after this purchase.
For 1080p gaming 4GB should be fine, right? even at 1440p isn't that usually enough for any game?
Just get a cheap used card to hold you over. I bought a Strix 960 4GB for $125 recently. It's dead silent and the fans only spin when needed.
Fury X isn't bad, just gotta get a good price for it, since you basically need a good 3rd party fan for that cooler, from what I've seen
I say go for an EVGA 1070, I own one and It will be awesome for 1080 or 1440 for years, DX 11 or 12.
It's very very quiet and overclocks like a champ.
My fans run at 80% under load, thats what I have for overclock, and it's silent with my headset on (PC is on desk next to monitor)
4GB is fine for 1080, since you get diminishing returns on AA filters (for example, 8x AA is gonna cost much more than it shows)
Like I said,
- Fury X with a Noctua or Corsair Mag Lev
- Custom 480 (IF you can find one) ((only for 1080p))
- EVGA 1070 (Personal recommendation)
I suggest that you don't but from a company that has AMD and Nvidia cards, like MSI or Gigabyte, as they tent to have that "jack of all trades, master of none" quality
IF you're buying AMD, go Sapphire or Red Devil, etc
If you're buying Nvidia, go EVGA or Zotac, etc

Sell the 390x and go the 1080 route probably only way to really see an upgrade
