400-600 dollar GPU for 3d modeling

Hey guys i am building a computer for a family freind that is in the cd modeling /cnc business an im looking at the Quadro M2000. would this be alright? i dont know the AMD equivlants. the programs he uses is herman miller z axis and a program called 20-20. Also it needs to support 4 monitors. Thanks.

Hey,
The AMD equivilent of the quadro M2000 is the FirePro W4300. I am not familiar with the programs that you mentioned but for light 3d modeling/rendering work these two are the way to go IMO. Also bear in mind that the card that you mention is, according to this article, essentially a GTX 950 with better drivers.
If you are willing to buy used and spend a little more you can check for the older k5000.

If you want a multipurpose machine that can also do gaming you can check the old GTX titan too.

The last one is not optimized for your workflow but it is a solid alternative for a multipurpose machine.
I Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot. Doing research for workstation parts is a little challenging. im guessing that the K5000 would be much faster than the M2000. Thanks

with respect none of this may even matter
I had a quick look at the 3d software you mention (seeing as its completely unknown to me)

and the system requirements on the faq here
http://chi-llc.com/faq

lead me to believe that the software could easily be run on integrated ;p

seriously lacking in info online... I cant even see if it uses opengl or directx for viewport acceleration (heck, it could even be a software renderer for all I know).

my advice is a common variety off the shelf gpu as opposed to a quadro or firegl that has enough ports to run the 4 monitors you require..

something like a 960 or 380

All I am saying is dont go crazy on the gpu for that particular piece of software.. at least not without a bit more research on what the gpu is actually doing.

he plans on upgrading to some hardcore software in the next year or so. he has been running it off of a piece of crap laptop. that was really all it could run. the software he plans on using soon takes advantage of some features with quadro and firepro cards.

apologies, since you mentioned those two specific pieces of software I assumed the build was specific to those two pieces of software.

Can you name the software he intends to upgrade to as that would help immensely

I have used quadro, I have used firegl and I have used gaming cards for viewport acceleration for 3d modelling and 9 times out of ten it has never mattered... and I have always been suspicious that the workstation cards extra stability (e.g less frequent driver related crashes, which lets face it.. is the main reason people buy these professional cards) was simply down to the fact that they were clocked lower :D

i believe it was autocad. his whole office will be upgrading in the next year, he is the prototype

AutoCAD lt runs on integrated no problem. For very heavy 3d modelling you'll need a quadros stability. An entry level quadro is pretty much useless for rendering though, better get a mid to high end gaming GPU for that.
