Does anyone recommend really good parts for a £400.00 build that's future proof and can play games at playable frame rates?

You should read the faq on asking these kinds of questions.

Wonder if a apu crossfire system would be any better....
Nope
If you don't need an operating system, this is what I would choose. It's pretty upgradeable.

I'm going to get a lot of flak for saying this.......but here it goes.
If its just for playing games, and your budget £400, hold out for the next gen console.
There I said it, I don't think £400 will get you a gaming rig that will be any better then the PS4 or Xbone or play next years games better, unless you plan to upgrade you GPU within 6 months.
Now poor you scorn on me everyone!
(But I reserve the right to redact and retract this once iv bothered to see what deals there are out there.......but come on we are talking £230 for a 7950 alone! a 7770 tops out at 35fps on last years games, it going to have no hope next year )
no; dedicated all the waaay!
A computer (talking in a non biz. environment) is never only for gaming. It can be mainly, but also some light browsing the web/office apps. When is office for xbox one coming? :p
I have a good mind to scald you with a hot iron. Nevermind scourn.
In all seriousness, you can expand any of the above builds. Rather arguing what device to spend £400 on, there's a £400 build you can add to. That's the main selling point of a gaming PC. Sure, it requires more money, but the investment can be made over a period of time.
Take my build as an example, I believe that is ready for an upgrade to a GTX760. Console can't beat that expandability.
Yes. yes yes, you're both right....and I do like that build Berserker!
Its just the new consoles are almost here, and that a bit of a unknown quantity, so it hard to sincerely recommend a PC in that budget that will be better value. like I say, 7770 = 30FPS not even maxed on BF3 and thats from 2011.....what hope does it have at playing 2014 games (that will run with no problem on next gen consoles).
You will get so much more for your money if you save up anther £100 and wait for some of these cards to come down like they have in the US of A = equverlant of £150 for a 7950 this week! thouse prices will be heading to this side of the pond soon.
I'd give the 7770GHz a little more credit than that. It can get high settings on BF3. I am unsure if that has anything to do with driver updates.

Although, console graphics are supposed to be a little better this generation
I like it, accept the single channel memory! Running 2 sticks in dual channel will always be better than 1 even if it's 2x2GB. So just change that and it's good to go!
It's with the intention of adding a second stick, so he can have 8GB in dual channel. That way his performance won't diminish, and he will have plenty of RAM. I had to keep it nearer the budget :(
yea but if you got a apu crossfired with something else it could be better and and you'd end up with more upgrade ability
yes but we all want consoles (well atleast most of us) want consoles to die hell along with their subscriptions.
any ways if he/she spent more money on a pc she'd save money on the games with steam sales (and over here in ireland the pc games are 15 euro cheaper even before release) humble bundels ect but anyways
DOWN WITH CONSOLES!!!
