3D Workstation build

Hi All,

Id love to get some feedback. I do 3D Rendering, CAD and photography. I use RHINO 3D, AutoCAD (regular, 3D, Architecture, some 3DS Max), VRAY, Lands Design, Flamingo, Accurender, Google Earth, SketchUp when I have to, (and plan on using IRAY) and Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I do landscape and Urban design and utilize many many blocks and can get very detailed and have literally thousands of landscaping plants in one design. My build is:

ASUS Z10PE-D16 WS LGA2011-v3/ Intel C612 PCH/ DDR4/ Quad CrossFireX and 3-Way SLI/ SATA3&USB3.0/ M.2/ A&V&2GbE/ EEB Server Motherboard

4 x Kingston 16GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Server Memory Model KVR21R15D4/16

2 x Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 Haswell-EP 2.4 GHz LGA 2011-3 85W BX80644E52630V3 Server Processor

2 x NVIDIA Quadro M4000 8 GB RAM

512 GB SSD

2 TB Harddrive

Dell 27" 5k Display

Thank you

As in this is something you're going to buy? Or is it something you already have

I'm in the process of purchasing the parts. I already have the two Quadros. WIll this do for 3D Modeling and Rendering?

If your software can use OpenCL ya coulda saved a bit going with Firepro W8100s, otherwise you really don't need ECC memory, you should go for a 5820k or the 5960X dending on your budget

and that 5k display just so isn't worth it especially at that screen size if you're using windows, check out a 40" 4k korean display, the amount of usable screen space is great, and you could buy like 3 of them for the price of that 5k display

I was wondering about that display. Thanks, I do need the screen real estate. Ill get the 4K displays instead but three wont fit on my desk! and Ill check out those other CPU's. I really wanted to take advantage of CUDA using VRAY and I do a ton of AutoCAD which really recommends using the Quadros. Plus I already bought the Quadros and cant return them. Thank You!

That E5-2630 v3 is a hyperthreaded octacore for around £550, not a bad option. the 5960X is much more.
If you went for the 5820K you'd be loosing 4 threads over that xeon.

AutoCAD is still somewhat dependent on IPC so the 5820k is a good compromise between IPC and thread count.

Seems solid to me. I might have gone with an AMD card (I know, you got yourself Quadros allready).
The only thing I am really not sure about is the need for better cooling. Xeons do not output that much heat but as they are somewhat expensive adequate cooling is to be considered.

Ya, it has more cores, but at base the 5820k is up on it by 1Ghz, and it's unlocked as well so you could push it a bit farther, unless ya really need ECC or the extra threads it's probably not worth it

With the 5820K is it possible to do duals? I chose XEON to have dual CPU's, that motherboard only takes XEON's. Are those dual XEON E5-2630 CPU's better? Or single I7 5820K better for what I'm doing? I don't EVER play games. I only use this for 3D Modeling and Photography.

Does auto cad even take advantage of multiple CPUs?

I know the 2013 auto cad does not work with multiple cpus. Has this changed?

I am also pretty sure RHINO cant (in fact I wanna say its really a single core program), and I know for certain that sketchup can not use it either.

If your programs can utilize all those threads then sure, but for the most part having the 5820k may prove better overall for programs that need higher per core performance.
