3d printed computer case?

so i was thinking the other day how cool would it be to have a 3d printed case...could a 3d printed case withstand the weight of alot of pc parts? or even watch the case be 3d printed then put in the pc parts i haven't seen a youtube video of such a thing but i think it would be awesome as well as if you could get it to work it would be the ultimate custom tower for you right? any ways as always please post thoughts and ideas if you have a 3d printer and have done such a thing do you have a video of the process? i think it would be cool to see take care if this is int the wrong place for the fourms please let me know so i can fix it i didn't know where to place this post

would be pretty awesome but I don't think you will be able to print anything other than an M-ITX case unless you have a massive printer and days worth of spools of material to print.

I could see printing a test bench, that would be pretty nifty, but a whole case? Eh who knows, you would need a crap ton of plastic to try and make one, so a test bench imo would be plausible.

indeed you could possible print it out in a few peaces but when you peace it together it could be like a locking puzzle peace?

You could always go the expensive option.

Design the case and send it into shapeways have them do it out of expensive exotic materials in nearly whatever size you like. It would cost a bomb but like you aid would be truly unique.

For a home made one, If I was going to do it I would add in some sort of metal frame the printer would work around for stability and support. Also leave holes or spaces for threaded inserts for stand off locations.

Well, you'd need one big ass printer, or/and a lot of time(and plastic).

My printer only prints 6in^3.  You'd need some massive build volume, and it'll be hard to print with the amount of complexity a computer case has.

Actually it can be done pretty easily...

You can get a motherboard tray from an old case and build panels and get them together with screws. Just like a Phanteks Enthoo cases.

If you want everything to be printed, you can go with Lian Li tray design, meaning no tray. LianLi have rails for the mobo. On the rails there are holes for the standoffs. But all else need to be made panel by panel and then screwed together.

But yes, it could be made. You just need a lot of planning and time...

The first problem that comes to mind is that pretty much any consumer based 3D printed material is terrible at holding a thread, you certainly wont be able to print a fine enough one into the parts given most PC cases are based threads no larger than M4. You might be able to get away with printing the pilot hole and tapping after but the life of the thread will be minimal, maybe one attempt to put a stand off in and if you overtighten it even slightly the thread will strip.
