3970x Threadripper Overheat msg on bootup / Restart

Has anyone else experienced this issue during stress testing? My CPU is consistently hitting 82–85°C under load, even with a Noctua cooler and solid airflow throughout the case.

I’ve downclocked the RAM to 2666MHz (it was previously running at 3200MHz with 256GB for 4–5 years without issue), but I’m not sure if what I’m seeing is just a sensor glitch or a sign that the CPU or motherboard is starting to fail.

The only time I run into problems is with Unreal Engine 5 games like Marvel Rivals. Video editing and other workloads seem to be fine. I did roll back to driver 566.33, and that seems to have stabilized things a bit.

Trying to figure out if it’s time to move on from this setup and switch to something like the Ryzen 9000 series.

Have you checked the thermal paste? May require re-application?

yea already did that temps are all normal under 100% load and it only happens when i reboot system shows before startup.

Downclocking the ram will have only minor effect on heat.
Your temps seem fine at first, your system is not shuting down because of overheating?

Never shuts down to overheating just displays overheat Bios message when I restart the PC after gaming.

Looks more like a malfunctioning sensor to me🤔

hang on, so this issue is not during 100% load but AFTER that when you reboot? Are you using something like GRUB (linux bootloader) or just one OS (windows?) that boots up directly?

I have a ASUS X670E board with 9950X and I notice my fans spin up while waiting at the GRUB bootloader before selecting the OS to boot - wonder if it’s something in the BIOS that can preset CPU to low speed, then let the OS take control after boot?

I’ve settings to auto-detect my cooler/fans (PWM/other) and to set them to “silent” mode etc but they still spin up at the boot menu leading me to think something with the BIOS+GRUB bootloader causing the CPU to spin up to max or something.

Yea just windows on the system and was thinking It could be sensor issue but also leaning to something with game shaders causing the issue I know some USB device can cause odd issues on AMD with audio so changed out my DAC since that seemed to be causing some audio problems switched from focusrite scarlet Gen4 to a elgato Wave XLR.
