3.5 headphone jack and charging port hybrid

Hey

I was wondering, Apple have just released their new devices with the Lightning port which is pretty minimal. I like how the Lightning port is reversable and then it got me thinking; could a 3.5mm headphone jack be redesigned to act as a treditional headphone port as well as a charging port?

Would it be practically possible to make?

Just food for thought, thanks in advance. Matt

yes but no. technicaly it could, however since a headphone port is ment to send signal out to the headphones, a lot of older devices did not put diodes in the circut as they cause voltage drop (lower volume). because of this, if you pumped voltage though it, it could damage the electronics. however, IF they made a new standard so people wouldnt fuck up, then yes its poible.however, how would you charg your device and listen to it?

so what your saying is a redeisgn of the 3.5mm headphone jack which wouldnt be compatible with the headphones on the market today?

new devices could use the old jack (just not for charging)... however new devices could not use the new jack (some could, depending if they had diodes in the output circut to stop feedback voltage) however due to the fact SOME might break, it would have to be keyed so people wouldnt try.

but mainly what im saying, is the fact that you couldnt listen to your device and charge it is a major flaw, so it wont happen.

Truthfully I dont know exactly what you are talking about. BUT an iPod shuffle uses a 3.5mm jack to charge it.

it's probably designed for it, most headphones are not. and he's talking about the exact reverse.

lightning is capable of doing so because it's like usb.

it uses dedicated pins and wires for power, which do not transmit data.
