2MB FIBBR DP Cable Failure

Has anyone experienced failures with their FIBBR cables? I know from experience the 1m cables are hit and miss, but I had decent luck with their 2m ones purchased from Amazon.

Well that was up until today. I turned on my secondary PC which is set to 4K 120Hz 10bit HDR and the screen started flickering and then the display went into standby mode.

I have the current latest nVidia driver for the Gigabyte 3060 and also my Neo G8 was updated recently to the 1006 firmware so I thought they could be the culprit, however after flashing the Neo G8’s firmware I did test all computers with the monitor and L1Techs KVM and it was stable for the last few weeks. The last nVidia driver update was prior to when I did the Samsung firmware update.

The next thing I tried was to change KVM ports and Display Ports on the 3060, but the issue persisted. Interestingly my Mac Mini had no issue running 4K 120Hz 10bit HDR and my work laptop was also doing 4K 60Hz 10bit HDR without issue.

Backing the secondary PC down from 120Hz to 60Hz the monitor connect stabilized. The question is why could it no longer drive 120Hz when it could previously when I had the issue with my primary PC with the AORUS Master 3080Ti which refuses to work with the L1T KVM at 4K 60Hz 10bit HDR or above (I use this card with a FIBBR HDMI 2.1 cable direct to the monitor as a workaround)

Thinking that since my work laptop and Mac mini are working fine, the FIBBR 2m cable between the KVM and the Neo G8 should be okay. The laptop’s TB3 dock’s DP out is connected to the KVM via a 2m FIBBR cable and the Mac Mini is connected using a Club3D USB-C to DP cable which I know is copper to KVM to fiber which I know is less than ideal, but it works.

I have a couple of spare FIBBR 2m cable so I switched out the one between the secondary PC and the KVM, and bingo 4K 120Hz 10bit HDR is stable again.

I put the suspect cable between my work laptop and the KVM and it could drive 4K 60Hz 10bit HDR which is the max my work laptop could do. I then put that cable between my KVM and monitor and tested using the Mac Mini and 4K 120Hz 10bit HDR and the Neo G8 would not light up.

Do FIBBR cables degrade over time? Is 6 months the expected lifetime of a FIBBR fiber optic display cable? What experiences have others had with FIBBR cables?

Not sure 2m is worth it for a Fiber based E to O and O to E connection but, yes they can fail. The conversion takes place in the connector and their is very low power low voltage electronics that do the Electrical to Optical conversion.

They have to be crazy small and very efficent as they get their power from the HDMI and Display Port connects and not an external power supply.

They are also directional as there is a small set of power wires that run to the other end along with the fiber optic cable to power the receiver side of the cable.

If its only 6mths old I would contact them for a warranty replacement. I have 3x 100’ that have been in operation for several years now and they still work great. Granted they are not FIBBR brand, but its the same tech.

I have to use fibre optic display port cables running 4K 120Hz 10bit HDR with a Level1Techs KVM. Everything else, even 1 metre Club 3D seems to fail.

That is what I get for using a monitor like the Neo G8 that pushes DP1.4 to the max I guess. The KVM is handy for work so worth the hassle.

Wendell and co recommend the FIBBR brand with their KVM for these sorts of scenarios so I was curious if anyone else has experienced this sort of failure/degradation.

Will try to warranty the cable. I bought a heap from Amazon US when AU didn’t stock them but the most recent batch from AU. I need to figure out which Amazon this one came from but the serials on the cables don’t match those on the boxes. This is going to be fun if FIBBR care. Hopefully they don’t.

Hmmm, this is concerning to me as I just got a new monitor. I don’t have FIBBR cables but I’ll be looking into this on my own. Don’t wanna have to ship stuff back.

Thanks for the warning!

Amazon AU have accepted the return even after the return windows closed. I still need to ship it back to them but hopefully it is all good.

@Ak47.Exe I have a sample size of only four 2m FIBBR cables which is nothing in the grand scheme of things. I could have just been unlucky.

Having said that though I originally bought four 1m FIBBR cables and had to return all but one of them and that was concerning. Wendell and co also mentioned issues with the 1m cables so those would be from a bigger sample size including L1Techs experience with them.

Question I also have is are there any other brand fiber optic DP cables that can be used with the Level1Techs KVM? My understanding what allows the FIBBR ones to work is they can draw their power from either end?

I could be off base here, but I have reached out to other brand fiber cables asking them if two of their cables would work with the KVM in between and every time I got told no. It would be nice to have other brands as options here.
