Following on from the loot box controversy Belgium and Holland banned the sale of random in game item loot boxes for real money in game sold in their countries. This did nothing to stop the games industry practices globally but they have taken note.
2k have appealed to their fans to contact the Belgian Gaming Commission and ask them to repeal the ruling on loot boxes allowing their sale again. 2k have altered the game for those markets removing the ability to pay real money for in game items, but no where else and actively want it back in the effected games.
“We are working to comply with the BGC’s current interpretation of these laws,” the company wrote in the statement. “As a result, we have made some local changes to the MyTeam mode. These changes are necessary in order for us to accomodate the BGC’s interpretation of the Belgian Gaming Act. Specifically, we will be turning off the ability to purchase packs with premium (non-earned) currency/VC.”
They continue on saying they have been in talks with the BGC as 2k feels they are not violating any such laws but have complied for now with the ruling. It seems they do not have the clout themselves to get it changed and are now trying to use their fans as a vehicle to change the law.
2K says it’s having “continuing conversations” with Belgian officials about the BGC’s interpretation of the rules, and the company argues that the packs you can buy in games like NBA 2K19 already comply with Belgian gambling laws. “If you agree, we recommend that you contact your local government representative to communicate your opinion,” 2K wrote. “We will keep the community posted on any developments. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
It is a little funny considering it was the outrage of the fans in the first place that got loot boxes removed. They may be barking up the wrong tree.
Anecdotally I have seen comments relating to this indeed wanting to get in contact with the BGC, but instead to thank them for their work.
