2k Ask Belgian Fans To Contact Their Gaming Authorities To Have Loot Boxes Reinstated For NBA 2K19

Following on from the loot box controversy Belgium and Holland banned the sale of random in game item loot boxes for real money in game sold in their countries. This did nothing to stop the games industry practices globally but they have taken note.

2k have appealed to their fans to contact the Belgian Gaming Commission and ask them to repeal the ruling on loot boxes allowing their sale again. 2k have altered the game for those markets removing the ability to pay real money for in game items, but no where else and actively want it back in the effected games.

“We are working to comply with the BGC’s current interpretation of these laws,” the company wrote in the statement. “As a result, we have made some local changes to the MyTeam mode. These changes are necessary in order for us to accomodate the BGC’s interpretation of the Belgian Gaming Act. Specifically, we will be turning off the ability to purchase packs with premium (non-earned) currency/VC.”

They continue on saying they have been in talks with the BGC as 2k feels they are not violating any such laws but have complied for now with the ruling. It seems they do not have the clout themselves to get it changed and are now trying to use their fans as a vehicle to change the law.

2K says it’s having “continuing conversations” with Belgian officials about the BGC’s interpretation of the rules, and the company argues that the packs you can buy in games like NBA 2K19 already comply with Belgian gambling laws. “If you agree, we recommend that you contact your local government representative to communicate your opinion,” 2K wrote. “We will keep the community posted on any developments. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

It is a little funny considering it was the outrage of the fans in the first place that got loot boxes removed. They may be barking up the wrong tree.

Anecdotally I have seen comments relating to this indeed wanting to get in contact with the BGC, but instead to thank them for their work.

Die commerce die. That is what I really want.

But dealing with the real world …

In regards to loot boxes if they are just cosmetic then fine as long as the cost is not astronomical and to make them easier to stomach have a good portion go to charitable causes that way next to nobody will complain about them being in games.

As for 2K doing what they are doing … / rolls eyes

It would be funny to see if this backfires on 2k and fans from other countries tell them that loot boxes are not what they want.

It seems like that is the message being reported back.

Good.

About time players got woke and stopped putting up with this.

The reddit thread where I was linked from is pretty vocal about 2k being all sorts of unrepeatable words in good company. Though 100 or so people on a forum/echo chamber does not really mean much.

Though everywhere I see this news the comments that follow are all praising the BGC and livid about 2k.

Though when release day comes around… Yeah this will not change quickly.

2K are intentionally overlooking what it is exactly that the gaming authorities find objectionable: the randomness of loot boxes.

There’d be no problem if they just straight up sold items instead of trying to force customers to buy lots and lots of loot boxes to maybe get the item they wanted.
