280x crossfire issues

Hey guys, So I just hooked up 2 x ASUS r9 280x cards in crossfire, they work fine, but the second card is always running on %99 percent load. Im using Catalyst 14.4

You can't always trust msi afterburner (i'm guessing that's how you're checking usage). Are the temps of your second card normal? If both cards are operating at similar temps I wouldn't worry about it. This happened to me a lot when I used dual 6870's. The temps of both cards were normal however so I chalked it up to a false reading. restarting my computer usually fixed the issue.

No ive used multiple programs, the second card was running at %100 percent, the temps were higher and the fans here audibly louder. and as soon as i disable crossfire both cards run fine

That is strange. The only thing I can really suggest is completely removing your driver then reinstall.

Its just the way its works in crossfire. No load balancing. Its a good idea to switch around the cards every so often to help promote as even as wear as possible.

So one card will always be on 100% ? that s kinda dumb

Its one of the reasons why most recommend the strongest single gpu possible verses sli or cf.If someone come up with a solution for it . I dont know about it. I have monkey things around like switching the outputs to the monitors in the opposite card with the load. All in all nothing really makes alot of difference.

I have 2 7950s in crossfire and have no such problem. Typically my top main card would be at 500mhz and up to 40% use when browsing, while the 2nd card just idles at 300mhz and 0%. When gaming they both jump up to where ever I have them set (900mhz because its hot out) primary card always a bit higher use than the 2nd.

I did have to turn off ULPS in the reg. I am using 13.12 driver, 14.4 worked for a day then BSOD so I rolled back. Google up how to turn off ULPS in you haven't and maybe try an older driver.

Have you tried the ol-switch-a-roo (rotating the cards positions).

No I havnt had a chance to try anything yet. I will try switching the cards as well as fiddling around with drivers, and ULPS

Good luck.

I just checked you profile and see you had a Nvidia card previously, be sure you have deleted all the old drivers as they may cause you some grief as well.

I would hazard a guess that you have enabled 'Overdrive' in the CCC panel, in turn in a crossfire setup sometimes this gpu load bug rears its ugly head. Has been around for years, (good work AMD...).

So in CCC revert back to default everything, then use MSI Afterburner (or similar) to oc etc.

I try not to watch my loads too close and just ramp the fans to keep the heavy load card cooler. I consider it worst than a bug. i want even wear across my gpus. Bad thing is i think the older ati cards had a solution for this.

Ok so I fixed the issue. All I did was install MSI afterburner and use that to disable ULPS. I still have overdrive enabled in the CCC and it is not causing any issues.

I will have to give that a try. Will the issue comeback ?

Stupid ULPS! causes alot of trouble. Thats great enjoy your crossfire. If you have Tomb Raider, it scales very well.

Possibly, I have yet to update MSI afterburner or the AMD drivers, but regardless, It takes seconds to fix, so Im not worried about it

I havent tried the msi afterburner thing, Usually always comes back at some point on everything else i have tried.

Ya I would try the MSI thing. If it does come back on all you have to do is re-check the box in afterburner
